Each year, September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process. We acknowledge that the land on which we live, work, and gather is the traditional territory of Indigenous Peoples across what we now call Canada. From coast to coast to coast, we recognize the ancestral lands of the First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples, who have lived on and cared for this land for thousands of years. We honour their enduring connection to these territories, the rich cultures, languages, and knowledge systems they hold, and their ongoing contributions to the diverse fabric of this country. We commit to reconciliation and building respectful relationships with Indigenous communities, acknowledging the painful history of colonization and the need for meaningful action towards justice and healing. May we all learn from and stand in solidarity with the original stewards of these lands, as we work together to create a future of mutual respect, inclusivity, and sustainability.

Today, the White House celebrates the 25th Annuversary of the White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (WHIAANHPI). President Biden and Vice President Harris celebrate the diversity of cultures, breadth of achievement, and remarkable contributions of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AA and NHPI) communities, while also recognizing the systemic barriers to equity, justice, and opportunity that still put the American dream out of reach for far too many AA and NHPI people across the United States. For more than three years, the Biden-Harris Administration has leveraged the full force of the Federal Government to ensure the promise of America for all AA and NHPI communities — including by issuing an Executive Order establishing the President’s Advisory Commission and White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (WHIAANHPI). https://lnkd.in/ebzN32bN

The 26th of January marks 236 years since the British First Fleet invaded First Nations land. It is a day of mourning, commemorating 236 years of dispossession, inequality and destruction which continues today. The first Day of Mourning was organised by First Nations Elders and activists on 26 January 1938. We mourn the attempted destruction of First Nations languages and culture, the theft of Country and songlines, and the loss of children who were stolen from their families. We mourn for those who have died and those who still suffer injustices and inequality in systems built to keep First Nations people disenfranchised here in Australia and around the world. Importantly, it is a day to respect and pay tribute to the resistance and resilience of First Nations people – and come together to reflect and heal. Today’s white Australia has a strong black history. Through it all, First Nations connection to culture, Country and community has survived and remains strong. Sovereignty has never been ceded – this always was and always will be First Nations land.
