I'm gonna say it: companies who still have waiting periods before new hires can use their PTO should do some hard self reflection. Employees' lives don't go on hold when they start a new job....and that may include medical appointments, sick children, emergencies, court dates, religious observances, or the need to renew a driver's license. If the company has a 3 month (or even worse, 6 month) waiting period to use PTO, the employee is penalized things that happen beyond their control. At my current company, Medtronic, employees are given a full 40 hours of their PTO allotment upon hire, and accrue the balance over the year. This means it was no problem for my colleague to take his toddler to the pediatrician for her annual check up during his first week. He wanted to start the job, but was willing to delay his start date by a week if his child's doctor's appointment was going to be a problem. Life happens, and why should employees be forced to choose between delaying a child's doctors appointment, delaying their start date at a new job, or losing a day's pay? Doesn't it benefit the employer to have the new hire start as soon as possible, even if they have to miss their first Thursday? Reasonable, employee friendly policies like this are one of many things that make me proud to work at Medtronic. Companies with PTO waiting periods: consider the effect on employees' lives, and by extension, employee satisfaction, engagement, and retention. P.S. same goes for holiday pay waiting periods.
