You probably heard about the way this young salesperson was let go. I really can't figure out why #managers and #hr can't get it right. In this case, the company basically has a three month probation. But they apparently don't tell the employee. If #newhires don’t perform well enough or if you’re not a good match, they let you go. I really have no problem with a probationary period. If someone doesn't have the skill or doesn’t match it is much better to let them go right away than to wait 6 months, a year, or many years for some economic layoff to show up so you can let them go. You can usually tell if someone’s gonna fit in three months. This is why all the new hires we interviewed were worried about whether their performance was up to snuff. They wanted to prove themselves right away. But we have to give them feedback and training along the way. As a manager it's your responsibility to be honest. You can't give positive feedback which you don't mean to avoid a negative interaction. Then it comes as a shock when someone finds out they're not performing. But worse, we can’t lay people off impersonally. All companies have to do is have the manager talk to the employee and do it themselves, no matter how much they hate it. It’s the lack of respect and compassion that’s just wrong. People have to be treated like human beings. No mass email layoffs. No HR impersonal uninformed process. Employment is always about the match between the person & the work, team & manager. But it is a shonda, as we say in the Yiddish, for companies to be jerks this way. Do you all remember this is your brain... and this is your brain on drugs commercials from the 90s where they cracked an egg and showed it on a frying pan? Those commercials were made because people had an idea of what drugs and alcohol abuse did to your brain, but perhaps it did not quite resonate. After all, you cannot see what's happening inside of your head. In that case, it was out sight, but not out of your mind. I am sick of hearing from the recruiting and hiring community that there is a "process" they follow for hiring that "works." This picture is the national debt of an entire nation. That number, $1.047 trillion, is less than the national turnover cost of US based companies utilizing a hiring "process" that "works." - Processes fail - People misperceive - Companies overlook - NUMBERS DON'T LIE Any questions?

Reflections “Do You” -Dr. Dick Davis II This is a great listen. I occasionally get an offline or inbox on what a future employer would say about a cringy post that I have made. First off, let’s be clear … I’m the prize. Two decades of consulting experience with Fortune 500s and a terminal degree from a world class institution? Moreover, ask yourself did you apply for the role or did they seek you out? It matters. Reputational damage cuts both ways. So does your agency when it comes to your personal brand. And the company should never control your brand or professional agency. Your ability to FSO is all they need to be concerned with. You may not want to associate your brand with a company. You may not like how they DEI. Layoffs are real. And when that time comes… The feeling you are left with is betrayal. You were all in, the company was until they were not. It’s a relationship, not a marriage. Treat it that way. When you know your worth and your value, not everyone gets to date you and you should not want to date just anyone. When you do decide they are worthy, make sure that you are always in the winning position. Let them adjust to you. Do not compromise or settle. And always be thinking about your next move. There are many companies that will do what they won’t do. Especially their competitors. Always keep that resume fresh and your options open. Stay savage, stay sharp. Be great!

Way back in the day, when people were laid off, it wasn't publicly advertised. Tv news didn't run with those stories. Businesses didn't post it (except on business sites). People acted embarrassed/ashamed of actions over which they had no control. Now, thanks to the innanet/social media, hopefully people see: 1. Layoffs are business decisions. Let's not own a shame that's not ours to own. 2. Layoffs are business decisions. If you're not an owner, you're a worker who can be laid off at any time. 3. Layoffs are business decisions. Why give your self-esteem to jobs that aren't yours at firms you don't own? 4. Layoffs are business decisions. Anyone can lose a job.
