Older adults are still the majority of our cancer patients. In this discussion, we deep dive into the crucial issues around scholarship, clinical care, training, and infrastructure for advancing the care for older adults with cancer. In addition to discussing the BJ Kennedy Award, which includes some of our newest studies of bringing #supportivecare to older adults in lower resourced areas in California and Brazil. Thorough discussions about end of life care are essential in ensuring that advanced cancer patients are treated according to their wishes. The American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Medicine has recently published Kaiser Permanente research, showing that using digital tools to prompt specific EOL discussions improves clarity of wishes and consistency in care, while maintaining consistent documentation across teams. Prompting such as this research encourages patients to clearly outline their specific treatment goals and life priorities, leading to more satisfied outcomes: Smilow Cancer Hospital Yale New Haven Hospital Yale New Haven Health #HowWeHospitalist #Hospitalist #HospitalMedicine #CancerCare #Oncology #CancerTreatment #EndOfLifeCare #EndOfLifePlanning

When it comes to cancer care, how can clinicians strike a balance between personalization (which includes treatment tailored to the individual), with standardization (which adheres to treatments with demonstrated outcomes)? Get insight on this and other pressing oncology topics from experts like our EVP & CMO Robert Groves, MD in this article based on the recent AJMC - The American Journal of Managed Care Advancing Value-Based Oncology event: https://bit.ly/46DMedb. “The means or strategies we have for providing #PalliativeCare are widened. We know it’s the best way to take care of patients, and we want to make sure more patients are accessing this essential service.” Dr. @Jennifer Temel Dr. Temel, oncologist and Dr. @Joseph Greer, psychologist, were the pioneers who showed over a decade ago that when physicians integrated palliative care early, patients actually lived longer compared to patients who didn’t receive early palliative care. With this new randomised clinical trial they demonstrated that there is no difference in terms of efficacy if palliative care are given virtually versus monthly sessions in patients with lung cancer in a setting of #EarlyPalliativeCare. Moving palliative care sessions to #telehealth might enable more patients to get such care. These results should provide a rationale for continuing or even expanding telehealth palliative care programs, especially when considering more intangible benefits of virtual visits. #ASCO24 #SimultaneousPalliativeCare #Oncology #QualityOfLife #PalliativeCareResearch

Absolutely! Probably the most important specialty to allow patients to remain at home. If mental health can be managed virtually why not palliative treatment modalities! Palliative care supports patient centered care with focus on individual comfort and QOL. What is more effective in maintaining comfort then a patient remaining home?

I enjoyed writing this story because I learned about treatment for liver, pancreas and gallbladder cancers, and also about how difficult and complicated it can be to go through cancer treatment. My heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful folks in the clinic at the University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center for always putting patient needs first. As a #medicalwriter, it's these kinds of stories that feed my soul. #medicalwriting. https://lnkd.in/e6ZwFyR8
