Please join me in recognizing the hard work of the CRDC team in publishing a four-part series on the CRDC that is now live online in Cancer Research. As the CRDC marks its 10-year anniversary this year, this series demonstrates how far we have come and points to the opportunities ahead as the CRDC continues to serve a foundational role in the NCI’s cancer data ecosystem. I had an illuminating chat recently with Charlotte Coles, Professor of Breast Cancer Clinical Oncology at the University of Cambridge, UK. She chaired The Lancet’s Breast Cancer Commission released this week, which highlights global breast cancer inequities and presents a roadmap to tackle these urgent challenges. It’s an honour to have this one-to-one time with experts, especially when they are brilliant and down-to-earth like Prof Coles. Several points she made stood out for me: “There are a lot of current misconceptions that breast cancer is solved, and it isn't.” “Often, you see a piece on breast cancer and 95% is focused on curing early breast cancer…we talk a lot about the challenges around metastatic breast cancer but have a really positive outlook about the future. We hope to be able to cure some people with metastatic breast cancer, which has been thought to be impossible in the past. But we want to make sure that we alleviate suffering for all, and don't abandon anyone. It's about changing the whole mindset” around metastatic breast cancer. “Prevention is incredibly important”. But “it has to be a united policy change because in terms of prevention, it's very much been directed at individuals, which you could see almost like blame...But if you actually link it with policy, then that makes it much easier for those individuals to be able to modify their lives”. For breast cancer clinicians, Coles hopes the Commission can inform and galvanise them to “realise what's happening globally. Let's not be complacent and let's try and think about what we can do. But rather than as individual health-care practitioners, what we can actually do as a body, and how much further we can go if we work together”. https://lnkd.in/eps3iiCN #breastcancer #metastaticbreastcancer #inequity #globalhealth #lancet
