What does a Chief Of Staff do? When I first heard the title "Chief of Staff," my mind immediately flashed to Doug Stamper from House of Cards - the epitome of a right-hand man handling all sorts of clandestine tasks for the President. Suffice it to say, I wasn't exactly thrilled about the association! 😅 However, after diving into the role and understanding its nuances, I've come to appreciate the multifaceted nature of being a Chief of Staff. So, what exactly does a Chief of Staff do? In essence, the Chief of Staff role is as diverse as the companies and founders they support. Here's how I'd break it down: 1. Sounding board for the Founders: As a Chief of Staff, I serve as a trusted advisor and sounding board for our founders. Whether it's brainstorming new ideas, providing strategic insights, or offering a different perspective, I'm here to support their vision and help navigate key decisions. 2. Bridge between employees and Founders: One of the most rewarding aspects of this role is acting as a bridge between our incredible team and our founders. I facilitate communication, gather feedback, and ensure that everyone's voices are heard as we work towards our common goals. 3. Driving strategic initiatives: From spearheading special projects to overseeing strategic initiatives, I work closely with our leadership team to execute our vision and propel our company forward. Ultimately, being a Chief of Staff is about wearing many hats, adapting to evolving needs, and being a true partner to our founders.

Reflecting on the profound impact of everyday interactions. Years ago, as a front desk manager at a newly opened resort, a simple act of kindness led to a life-changing moment. A woman with her infant son approached me, asking to see a guest room. Little did I know, she was the Associate Director in our company’s regional sales office, who would soon be returning to work from maternity leave. Since the resort had opened during her leave, she hadn't been able to attend the resort tours for her team. I felt compelled to give her a full tour, and we ended up spending over an hour exploring the resort together. Her gratitude was overwhelming at the end of our impromptu tour. Months later, after she had returned to work, she approached me at the desk. Remembering our earlier encounter, she thanked me again for the tour, but then asked me a surprising question: had I ever considered a career in group sales? That moment marked the beginning of an incredible journey. A short while later she became the Director of Sales in our regional sales office, and after working in that office as a Group Sales Manager for a few years, I advanced to Associate Director of Sales. Our office became a tight-knit team, many of whom I still call friends today. She remains my mentor, and though our paths diverged as we took on different leadership roles (and eventually we both chose to go back into individual contributor roles to focus more on our families), I will always cherish the years we worked together as some of the best in my career. This experience taught me a valuable lesson: you never know where your next interaction could take you. It could lead to a lifelong friendship, reveal a new career path, or simply brighten someone's day. #CareerJourney #KindnessMatters #UnexpectedOpportunities #thewayyoutreatpeoplematters

What can leaders learn about team building from wedding planning? There’s no guarantee that a company picnic will be team building rather than team straining. Think of planning your wedding (or of any wedding planning you’ve seen in TV and movies). Was making the seating chart easy? Can’t put Aunt Fran next to Cousin John. They don’t get along. And Sally Cawdry and Devon Brash used to date… And that didn’t end well. On the other hand, Uncle Bill and Jesse Cromwell share an interest in obscure collectible ducks. Wedding planners carefully crafted even the seating chart to lift up the dynamic. Company picnics randomize the dynamic. I’m certainly not saying, “Don’t hold a picnic.” I am suggesting, it may or may not improve morale, team dynamics, and bonding. How does your experience reflect on company picnics (and similar things like happy hours, etc)?

Executive and Administrative Assistant Trainer, Founder and CEO, Author, Speaker, and Coach at Office Dynamics International
Several years ago, we started a new tradition at Office Dynamics International. Being that this was Delani Denton's first year on the team, she had to experience her initiation. Her response was priceless! Although this was something we did as a joke and to make her laugh, it brings up an important concept. Well, a few actually: • Creating moments and memories like these are powerful for your team's morale and promotes a positive company culture. • Having company traditions creates a sense of distinction and belonging. This is why major sports teams have their own traditions to grow the camaraderie. • Surprises are extra powerful; make sure your team member isn't expecting them, and it will strengthen the impact of the moment. I know, I am being an educator, but I had to take this fun moment and explain my thoughts. As executive and administrative assistants, go the extra mile and think of ways you can do the same within your own organizations. And yes, Delani still has most of her desk items wrapped. Understandably, she did have to unwrap the keyboard and mouse.

Does kindness pay the bills? A couple of months ago, a client reached out, thinking I was the Conference Planner assigned to her event—even before her contract was signed. When we first worked together, I was new to the role and knew very little about planning, but I put everything into making sure her event was a success (thanks to my operations background, I knew I could deliver a great experience). When I confirmed that I’d be handling her event again, she texted, “Woo hoo!! 🙌🏻 dream team!! 💗” And this wasn’t the first time. Another client once said, “Let me know what I need to do for you to plan my next program.” It got me thinking—people don’t just care about the service; they care about the person behind it. So, is kindness a good career strategy? It’s not something I can list on my CV, but it’s a powerful reminder of what truly matters: the soft skills that build trust, connections, and ultimately, success. How you treat people is something worth holding onto. Agree? #conferenceplanner #corporateevents #tarrytown #tarrytownhouseestate #kindness #customerservice
