I have been truly enjoying Jess Almlie, M.S.’s new Podcast “L&D Must Change”. Today I listened to the best episode to date IMHO. Amber Watts🌱 was her guest. I could have listened for so much longer. I love onboarding!! It makes my heart smile. 📣Below are a few of my favorite discussion topics📣 🏃♀️Thinking of onboarding as a relay. 🏃♀️ Genius metaphor! Everyone plays a role and it takes a coordinated team effort to be successful. No no one can be successful without strong partners. 🎯 Get involved in talent acquisition!! 🎯 I cannot shout this loud enough. Picture Kevin McAllister going down on one knee and yelling YES!! This an absolute essential relay member. Your sourcer and/or recruiter should be in your top 8. Your work and actions need to compliment each other. If your acquisition team cannot explain in detail to candidates what they can expect and what will be expectated of them within 30/60/90 days, it’s time to reassess this relationship. Equally, you should understand their processes, timelines etc. 🗓️ Everboarding > Onboarding only 🗓️ Stemming from the above, Day 1 of hire is not Day 1 of onboarding and doesn’t end with a “graduation”. Hence the concept of everboarding. That takes the full relay team. The more you can include these individuals early in the development process and incorporate their feedback in meaningful ways, the better chance of smooth transitions. 👥 Mentoring is not the same as having a buddy. 👥 Your new hires need various levels of support: buddy, manager, coaching mentor, peers etc. Another relay team here that all play specific and different roles. For this point, Amber explains that your new hires need a coach/mentor/accountability partner who they meet with weekly about performance/challenges/wins. This is not the person who answers your basic water cooler questions. 💾New technology is one of the last puzzle pieces.💻 You should not be forcing your strategy to fit technology. It needs to molded to meet the needs of the learner.
