Can the Pareto principle be used to optimize the supplier base in an organization? According to my experience in procurement indeed it is possible. The Pareto principle can be used in different strategies and different ways according to each strategiest. An example of use is: 1.-Identification of key suppliers: Find the most important suppliers currently representing 80% of our expenses. 2.-Supplier value analysis: Review thoroughly how these suppliers help us. Do they deliver on time? Do they have fair prices? Do they comply with laws, regulations, and standards? Do they contribute to environmental protection? Do they have adequate internal policies? 3.-Evaluation of key suppliers: Determine if the top 20% of suppliers provide 80% of what we need. If so, we will collaborate with them to improve together. If not, we will consider working with and developing the best current suppliers interested in growing and establishing a long-term relationship, and if it would be necessary looking for new suppliers is another option that must be evaluated. Optimizing suppliers is the objective! 4.-Developing long-term relationships: Working with our suppliers to advance in our respective areas, fostering mutual improvements, and consolidating a solid and lasting relationship.
