In 2023, Public Profit Senior Consultant Hannah Pickar attended the Advancing the Conversation on Scaling National Informal STEM Programs convening in Washington D.C., a conference to examine current frameworks and conceptions of scale in informal #STEM learning. As part of the convening, Hannah was involved in a working group to create a resource for those interested in equitably scaling informal STEM learning programs. Guidelines for Equitably Scaling Informal STEM Programs and Collaborative Decision-Making is a resource that outlines the contextual issues around scaling informal STEM programs, discusses the limitations of current frameworks, and provides six guidelines to consider. 🔬Cultivating STEM futures for girls Following on from International Day of Women and Girls in Science, I loved tuning into this special webinar featuring Dr Allison Master, psychologist and educator from the University Houston and Professor Lisa Harvey-Smith, Australia’s Women in STEM Ambassador. Allison shares some fascinating insights and research into the impact of negative gendered stereotypes on girls' pursuit of careers in STEM, particularly within computer science and engineering. Allison and Lisa discuss a range of impactful strategies educators (and parents) can use to shift the narrative including: 1️⃣ Promoting diverse role models in storytelling, and not just those from the dominant narrative. 2️⃣ Consciously shifting away from gendered stereotypes in early childhood – avoid limiting children by our expectations and assumptions. 3️⃣ Clearly naming engineering and computational science activities to demystify STEM in the curriculum, for example, coding, design work, and model building. 4️⃣ Ensuring STEM is mandatory in the high school curriculum, not an optional extra. 5️⃣ Encouraging a growth mindset, enabling and encouraging risk-taking and experimentation. #GirlsNeedRoleModels #WomenInSTEM #womeninscienceday Watch the webinar via the link below.

EDUCATION SPOTLIGHT 🔬 Check out this article by Jennifer C Sarrett that highlights the overlap between #DEI and #STEM. From Bias to Brilliance, is a great 3 minute read that highlights the importance of starting STEM/STEAM education early. Jennifer also highlights how important it is to make this education available for all children, regardless of socioeconomic or ethnic backgrounds. https://lnkd.in/g-nXY5zC

The author's words speak for themselves. The way we portray and talk about who is a "STEM person" matters and has long-term effects on how people view who works in STEM fields and subconsciously themselves as a "STEM person". Check out this great article! Always up to chat about the ideas.
This research is very true to my heart, where Remy Dou and I interrogate the underlying masculine expectations of what it means to be a "STEM person" and their durability. This work has prompted me to think about family engagement in STEM in entirely different ways, particularly by noting the tendencies to relegate what parents (and especially mothers) do to the sidelines of STEM participation. It's also led me to think about changing perspectives of what it means to be a STEM person NOT ONLY from how individuals think of themselves but how they extend their recognition to significant OTHERS. Our work implies a need to ensure university students are supported with structures that allow them to recognize others as STEM people in more gender-inclusive ways, without jeopardizing their own developing STEM identities. Thus, we suggest that initiatives that support the STEM identity of individual learners also extend their efforts to attend to how focal individuals perpetuate this inclusive understanding of STEM participation to others. https://lnkd.in/eXWFQkr6 #STEMidentity #womeninSTEM #familiesinSTEM

Cultivating diversity and inclusion is an essential aspect of every education system, encompassing differences in gender, race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. A diverse and inclusive STEM education system is built when students learn together and pursue their STEM aspirations regardless of their unique backgrounds or learning abilities. 📚 In today's blog, we look at the importance of promoting diversity and inclusion and highlight some strategies to encourage underrepresented groups to pursue STEM education, leading to careers in areas such as life sciences.
