Liquified biomethane is gaining popularity as a possible long term alternative fuel in the run up to 2050 and even beyond. This is exempified by the latest bunkering operation between Hapag-Lloyd AG, Titan and STX Group. "LBM or bio-LNG used in the maritime industry is produced from sustainable biomass feedstocks such as human or agricultural waste, which means it does not compete with the production of food, fiber, or fodder, as defined by regulations such as the EU’s RED II and the Renewable Fuel Standards in America. Annual production of biomethane, from which bio-LNG is produced, is currently around 30m tonnes or around 10% of shipping’s total annual energy demand. Jan Christensen, Senior Director of Fuel Purchasing at Hapag-Lloyd, commented on the development: “This pioneering deal demonstrates that bunkering large quantities of liquefied Biomethane is possible and scalable. However, there is still more progress required regarding the necessary infrastructure and the regulatory framework. For us, bunkering liquefied Biomethane is another measure in our step-by-step approach to further decarbonise our operations to reach our goal of becoming net-zero by 2045.”" According to the International Energy Agency, biofuels are expected to constitute 20 percent of the shipping fuel mix in 2050. Biomethane, with its compatibility with existing cryogenic infrastructure and potentially vast amounts of feedstock, may be the main driver to achieve this statistic. Furthermore, with feedstock mainly being agricultulral waste, biomethane has the potential to give countries with large agricultural populations, a leading position in the marathon to decarbonise shipping, and empowering our farmers in the process. Things to watch out for: 1. Management of methane slip along the production and supply chain. 2. Ethical treatment of stakeholders producing feedstock. 3. Efficient gathering and transport of feedstock to production plants. 4. Improving production processes. How else can the uptake be improved? The Tank Storage Awards took place at a mind-blowing event hall at the Schiecenter in Rotterdam on Tuesday. The whole location of the Lloydpier and Schiehaven told me a lot about previous energy transitions and the continuous changes in supply chains. The history of the Lloydkwartier dates back to around 1900. Due to increasing industrialization and product flows, new harbors were constructed, such as the Schiehaven. The Lloydpier owes its name to the shipping company Rotterdamse Lloyd. The first electricity factory in Rotterdam, the Schiecentrale, was also given a place in the Lloydkwartier to support a flourishing industry. But in the decades after the war, activity declined in the area. Port activities moved west as bigger ships with more draft needed deeper ports and more space for loading and unloading activities. At the same time, a transition from coal to oil and gas took place, ultimately resulting in the end of the Schiecentrale as a power station. Luckily, they transformed the Schiecentrale into an impressive venue where the Tank Storage Awards took place in the Turbinehal or old turbine room. After Stena Germanica, Stena Line is looking to retrofit two more ships to run on methanol. "As part of the project, the retrofit process will convert two out of the four main engines in each vessel to run on methanol alongside marine gas oil (MGO). The ship’s bunkering, storage, fuel supply and supporting systems will also be adapted for methanol. Stena Line’s ferry Stena Germanica was converted to be capable of running on methanol in 2015. Classed by LR, Stena Germanica is the only retrofitted methanol vessel in service and will provide valuable experience for the project to convert Stena Superfast VII and Stena Superfast VIII, according to the class society." Alongside LNG, methanol seems to be picking up steam among RoPax operators and thereby contributing to popularity in fuel adoption across segments. We must factor two challenges: 1. Ascertaining the green aspect of the fuel and it supply and production process. 2.Adequate training of crew to handle the fuel. What are your thoughts on this? 📢 Exciting Announcement 📢 CATAGEN have been successful in a consortium application to the Clean Maritime Demonstrator Competition (CMDC), supported by Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom and Innovate UK. The project will include a techno-economic feasibility study which will explore the opportunity of bringing novel clean fuel production technology to market, which has the potential to deliver significant decarbonisation to the UK’s maritime activities. Partnering with, EMEC: European Marine Energy Centre, Orkney Harbours (Orkney Islands Council), Highland Fuels, and Belfast Harbour Commissioners.   The feasibility study aims to showcase the use of CATAGEN's E-FUEL GEN technology to produce e-diesel and bio-diesel for the maritime sector, the use of e-diesel on marine vessels to displace fossil fuel, and the use of bio-diesel to supply port-side equipment.
