Did anyone else notice this trend 🎬 sweeping through this year's award-season films: the strategic use of black-and-white cinematography. Did you know? A record-breaking five major contenders this year (like Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" and Yorgos Lanthimos' "Poor Things") are using this powerful storytelling tool. Forget mere nostalgia. These directors are making deliberate choices to enhance the emotional impact of their narratives. Think of Oppenheimer using B&W to depict the stark realities of the atomic bomb, in contrast to the vibrant world of espionage shot in colour. Or "Poor Things" where Bella's freedom is symbolised by the switch from B&W to vibrant colour 🎆, as she transforms from childlike innocence to a bold, independent woman. The colours become characters themselves, guiding our emotional journey. 🎨 In our world of high-res and CGI, I found there's something profoundly honest about this trend. I loved being transported, where cinematic artistry transcends fancy tech, truly putting the story into the spotlight. 🌟 Can similar visual elements elevate your own projects? Behind the Scenes" portrays series of unexplored areas associated with any form of production, an event or creation as a whole. These include the efforts of writers, directors, actors and other crew members necessary for the realisation of a dream. For example, in films, the behind the scenes crew is involved in the planning, painting and creation of set, costume, and lighting and sound effects as well. Planning may be over done such that each and every shot is first sketched and often acted out, something called story boarding. However, chemistry between cast members is crucial as it not only boosts the performances but also creates a good mood on set. Sometimes, inexplicable things occur – technical hitches which may call for the crew to think on their feet and adapt fast. In addition, the organization of the behind scene work is substantial too. Deadlines have to be met, account to be controlled, assets to be used wisely.

Black and white movies, for my generation especially, I think would be quite hard to watch. Given, that our cinema is often full of colour and action in that sense. Over the weekend I watched 'Madol Duwa'. The movie, was not exactly in black and white but more so a brown. And yet, I found myself pleasantly drawn to the cinematography and really enjoying the movie. It reflected, in the manner in which they spoke, dressed, the architecture and overall outlook to life a time vastly different to the one I belong to. And yet, in many ways there seemed to be similarities. For instance, the representation of childhood seemed similar. There was one scene in the movie where the kids go catch frogs and play a prank. It reminded me of my brother and his friends who would catch frogs, build them a home and observe them keenly. It got me thinking that as time goes by and as new generations come forth and change along with it, there must remain some things that stay the same for us despite the different times we belong to. Similarly, maybe if we spent time understanding where each generation comes from, while we may still choose to disagree with certain notions it would offer clarity and understanding to theirs and ours thought process. I also realised that not all things are black and white. When you watch a black and white movie, colour although absent leaves the mind wandering and imagining as to what colours the attires and surroundings maybe. Similarly, if we ponder and choose to question more we'd find that maybe there's truth to certain notions or maybe we'd find that it's entirely wrong. But to question not with the intent of finding fault but to truly learn and widen ones horizon is a skill & quality that we seem to lack. Thus, limiting our point of view and the things we learn there of. So, maybe as generations come and change along with it, facilitating open conversation and asking questions and choosing to understand each other would make us realise that with the differences we have, there comes similarities too.

This month for the Distant Vistas: Movie of the Month, we select James Gunn's 2023 film Guardians of The Galaxy Vol.3 for the month of February. The entire Marvel cinematic universe has been a collection of films that I have stayed away from for years and despite watching the occasional movie I have never been interested in revisiting it. However when I chose to give the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy a chance I was not disappointed and was in fact surprised at the amount of care and affection James Gunn put into these three films. Visually this film couldn’t have been more perfectly crafted. Not only is this film accompanied by a banger of a soundtrack, but whilst listening to the heart throbbing tunes of Creep you also get to bear witness to some incredible 70s inspired cinematography by Henry Braham. This film just looks absolutely gorgeous and I think that is what sets it apart from other marvel films which typically fall victim to feeling stale and visually uninteresting. The biggest thing setting this movie apart from the trilogies previous two entries is that this is Rocket Raccoon's film. Anybody who has suffered loss will undoubtedly understand Rocket's plight and will be rooting for him the moment we see him as a young raccoon. At its core this film truly is an endearing heartfelt story about family and what it means to never leave behind your loved ones. I honestly don’t think Gunn could have picked a more satisfying conclusion for his trilogy. If you are in a similar situation and find yourself wanting to get into the Marvel franchise but don’t know where to begin then the Guardians franchise is a perfect place to start. There is nothing to hate about Vol.3, the comedy is well written, the action is gripping and the drama is real. All I can do now is ask myself the question; Why is this not nominated in the best picture category at the 2024 Academy Awards? This month for the Distant Vistas: Movie of the Month, we select Park Chan-wook’s 2003 film Oldboy for the month of January. Any sort of movie that leaves you thinking “damn, they really went there” is likely going to stick with you for a while, and a recent viewing of 2003s Oldboy is no exception. Possibly one of the best-paced action films I've seen in recent times, this South Korean revenge story is an absolute visual feast, with creative shot transitions, well-composed shots, and flawlessly choreographed fight sequences, the 2-hour runtime absolutely flies by. The film follows a man who has been kidnapped and placed in confinement for 15 years, and after escaping, he seeks answers and vengeance for why he was imprisoned. The story takes so many unexpected turns, with every twist going to darker places, paired with the film's warped sense of humour, compelling characters and almost hypnotic pacing that draws you into every sequence, I was completely hooked and will likely be seeking out other films from the same director. If you are someone who loves an incredibly solid action/thriller story with amazing fight sequences and creative cinematography you should check out Park Chan-wook's masterpiece Oldboy.
