I recently shared 6 things we can do as an industry to franchise more responsibly TODAY. Here they are: 1) Put a spotlight on which sales organizations/broker networks are requiring brands to sell as “absentee” or “semi-absentee” to be part of their portfolio to do deals 2) Provide free education to those who want to become a franchisee or a franchisor so they know what they’re getting themselves into first 3) For brands who sign up franchisees, publicize the units open in addition to the units sold. 4) Consultants and lawyers for early-stage franchisors recommend more founders wait to franchise until they have the capital and full-time effort to devote to franchising 5) Remove the word “absentee” from the franchise sales process and use words like “semi-involved” if the model permits hiring a manager 6) Remove “time claims” from the franchise sales process. “You only have to work X amount of hours per week/month/year to be successful” because it’s impossible to suggest one franchisee’s hour is the same as another franchisee.
