Year 11 Class of 2023 Achieve Excellent GCSE Results 🎉 We could not be prouder of our Year 11 Class of 2023 who have achieved outstanding success in their GCSE results today, with a fantastic 49% of grades awarded a 9 and 75% graded 9-8 (A*). In the context of grades returning to 2019 levels, the performance of this Year 11 cohort has been superb. Their success has stemmed from their commitment, determination to succeed and intellectual curiosity. The girls have worked so hard and are fortunate to have teachers who have supported them, piqued their interest and stretched their minds in a million different ways. We’re so excited to welcome back our Year 11s as Sixth Formers for the Autumn Term, who will be the next cohort to benefit from our inspirational Sixth Form Centre, the Old School House. We’ve already seen the positive impact of this innovative learning environment on our current Sixth Form students, following our Class of 2023 achieving outstanding A Level results last week. We look forward to nurturing this new cohort’s independence as they progress to the next stage in their educational journeys in September. Congratulations again to the GCSE Class of 2023! It was amazing to welcome David Buckland, founder of Cape Farewell, to FHS this morning for the launch of our Creative Perspectives on Climate Change project. 23 works of art produced by internationally renowned contributors, including David himself, Michael Pinsky, Ian McEwan, Dame Rachel Whiteread, Helen Moore, Dame Siobhan Davies, who we were also honoured to welcome this morning, and many others, will be displayed in an art trail around our school buildings at FHS to inspire our pupils and staff over the coming year. Pupils will take part in interdisciplinary workshops throughout the year as part of the project, challenging them to produce their own creative perspectives on climate change, that will in turn inspire and encourage others to think differently. Our Head, Alexandra Haydon, said, “Real world problem solving requires deep understanding of the problem at hand. The challenge to understand climate change, to educate ourselves about climate change, to reduce climate challenge is not just a political problem, or a scientific problem – it cuts across every subject that we study at FHS – literature, arts, maths, geography, history. The purpose of the project is to get all the girls involved and thinking – really thinking deeply – and producing their own work in response. This builds upon the foundations of a long held emphasis on creative thinking, problem-solving and innovation at Francis Holland.” At the end of the Spring Term, the project will culminate in a combined exhibition, curated by the girls, of the beautiful interdisciplinary work that our pupils and visiting students from other schools have produced in response to the project, alongside the professional work from the core exhibition. This is about creative thinking, story-telling, oracy and social influence- all key skills identified by the World Economic Forum as skills on the rise and essential for the 2030s workforce; and all skills that will empower our pupils to become the leaders, thinkers, innovators, designers, entrepreneurs, and game-changers of tomorrow. Thank you so much to Cape Farewell and all the artists who are working with us on this incredible initiative. We could not be more excited for the year to come. This week, we have held two very important admissions events for those interested in joining our FHS community in September 2025: our first 11+ Open Morning of the Autumn Term and our annual Sixth Form Information Evening for our current Year 11 and external candidates. On Tuesday morning, we welcomed prospective pupils for entry into Year 7 and their families to our 11+ Open Morning. Our Head, Alexandra Haydon, Sixth Formers and Year 8 pupils spoke about what makes our Francis Holland community so exceptional. Mrs Haydon discussed our distinctive emphasis on pupil happiness and wellbeing which ensures pupils truly feel known, able to pursue their passions and therefore able to achieve remarkable things. This was corroborated by our Sixth Form and Year 8 pupils, who spoke enthusiastically about their favourite aspects of FHS life, including the wealth of dramatic, artistic, musical, sporting and other co-curricular opportunities on offer, with over 80 clubs per week, getting to know our Hungarian Vizsla therapy dog, Kanga, and enjoying the delicious school food! On Wednesday evening, we welcomed our Year 11 pupils and families, as well as external candidates interested in Sixth Form entry in September 2025, to our annual Sixth Form Information Evening. Our Head, Mrs Haydon, Head of Sixth Form, Clare Stansfield, and Sixth Form pupils spoke about our national award-winning Sixth Form education at FHS, describing the unrivalled leadership, public-speaking and enterprise opportunities on offer, including our TEDx programme and excellent weekly Sixth Form Speaker Programme. They also discussed our amazing Futures & Innovation programme which focuses on the World Economic Forum skills for the future including story-telling, oracy and emotional intelligence. This sees our students go on to study a diverse range of courses from Agriculture to Neuroscience at top UK and international universities, as well as winning places on top degree internships and at world-renowned art and drama schools. The evening culminated with our guests being given tours of our state of the art Sixth Form Centre, the Old School House, by current UVI students, who were fantastic ambassadors for our FHS community. Such a thought-provoking and fascinating visit! Thank you so much to Jeremy Gilley MBE. #peace #internationaldayofpeace #peaceday #peaceoneday
Head of Francis Holland Sloane Square; Previously Deputy Head Academic at Millfield; Winner of i25 2019
What can we all do for peace? Yesterday, in a packed St Mary's Church, Francis Holland School - Sloane Square heard from the extraordinary Jeremy Gilley MBE, founder of Peace One Day, and a serious game changer. To an increasingly spell-bound audience, Jeremy shared his journey from the original idea, a single day of cease fire and non-violence around the world, to getting unanimous agreement from the UN for the founding of the International Day of Peace (21st September) just over a year later to 2024, 25 years on and the truly remarkable leaps forward that have been made as a result. In what seems to be an increasingly divided world Jeremy's key messages were simple: that we can all choose peace in our lives and choosing peace changes the environment around us for the better; that there is no mountain that you cannot climb if you are prepared to keep going and prepared to fail; that it is not the failure that defines you rather it is what you do in that moment of failure, picking yourself up, having another go, that defines you. The questions could have gone on all morning. It was a truly inspiring start to term. #peaceoneday #internationaldayofpeace #francishollandprep #francishollandsloanesquare

Thank you to Jeremy Gilley MBE for giving captivating talks at Francis Holland, Sloane Square and Francis Holland Prep about his hugely important and inspirational and fascinating work as Founder of Peace One Day. This could not be a more important topic in today's world and we are so grateful to Mr Gilley for imparting his wisdom to our staff and pupils. We look forward to celebrating World Peace Day on 21st September. #PeaceDay #WorldPeaceDay #PeaceOneDay #Peace #InspirationalSpeaker #UnitedNations #NGO
On Monday, we had the pleasure of welcoming Jeremy Gilley MBE, Founder of Peace One Day, to speak to pupils and staff at Francis Holland Prep and Francis Holland School - Sloane Square about his amazing work. In 1999, Mr Gilley set out to document his efforts to create an annual Peace Day, founding the non-profit organisation Peace One Day. In September 2001, as a result of his efforts, a General Assembly resolution was unanimously adopted by UN member states, establishing 21st September as an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence on the UN International Day of Peace – Peace Day. Peace Day is an opportunity for UN agencies and NGOs to focus their ongoing life-saving activities within a global context. To prove the day can work, Jeremy Gilley MBE and Peace One Day Ambassador Jude Law travelled to Afghanistan to spearhead a campaign that, over the years, has resulted in 4.5 million children being vaccinated against polio in hitherto unreachable areas, as a result of Peace Day agreements in the region. Since then, Peace One Day’s objective has been to institutionalise Peace Day on 21st September, making it a day that is self-sustaining, an annual day of global unity, a day of intercultural cooperation on an unprecedented scale. Throughout the years, millions of people have been active on Peace Day in every country of the world, and hundreds of organisations have carried out life-saving activities in areas of conflict. Thank you so much to Mr Gilley for such an thought-provoking, enlightening and fascinating talk that was hugely inspirational for our staff and pupils alike. We look forward to celebrating Peace Day on 21st September! #PeaceDay #WorldPeaceDay #PeaceOneDay #Peace #InspirationalSpeaker #UnitedNations #NGO
