Happy Indigenous People's Day! ✨ On this day, we recognize and honor the original inhabitants of North America and their contributions to our society. Indigenous people have lived on this land for thousands of years, and their cultures and traditions are an important part of our shared heritage. While celebrating the resilience and strength of Indigenous communities, it is also a day to learn about the challenges that Indigenous people continue to face, and to work towards a more just and equitable society for all. Here are some ways that you can celebrate Indigenous People's Day: 1. Educate yourself about Indigenous history and culture. 2. Support Indigenous businesses and organizations. 3. Attend Indigenous events and festivals. 4. Advocate for Indigenous rights.

It's #NationalComingOutDay! I always say this is my "best holiday of the year." Check out some of my reflections today in my most recent Medium article. TL;DR -- Shoutout to the University of Maryland for being rated the No 1. school for LGBTQ+ students - Go Terps! And Here's the rest of the good stuff at the end of the article ...So what can you do? #Ally is a verb — and a schoolhouse rock reminder: a verb is an action word, meaning it’s something you have to DO. You cannot say you are an ally to the LGBTQ+ community and actively vote against the interests of our literal humanity. You also cannot say you are an ally to the LGBTQ+ community and remain uninformed about what impacts the community. Don’t rely solely on your #queer friends and family to educate you — get on the interwebs, boo! It is the world wide web — great for following up on all the Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift tea, and also for news and fact-checking. UNBIASED fact-checking. Invest in books that teach your kiddos that families look different, and that’s okay. My girl is two, and when she starts school, it shouldn’t be her responsibility to explain to her peers why she has two mommies — just as other kids shouldn’t have to explain if they only have one. Do you have extra dollars? (Bless you in this economy!) Donate some of them to the organizations doing the work! Shoutout to the ACLU, Human Rights Campaign, The Center for Black Equity, GLAAD, The Trevor Project, Lambda Legal, and The Marsha P Johnson Institute. What if somebody comes out to you? This is by no means an exhaustive list, but here are some ideas to keep in your back pocket: Avoid This: “It doesn’t matter.” “I already knew that.” Anything that makes the conversation about you. Any intrusive questions about a person’s sexual experiences or their body. Anything that could feel like a religious, political, or moral judgment. And Try This: “You’ve always been my friend, and this doesn’t change that at all.” “I’m proud of you for being true to yourself.” “Awesome! How does it feel to share that with me?” “Thanks so much for trusting me.” Ask how they’d like you to hold the information so you can avoid accidentally outing them. Are you a privileged first person who should be keeping this information to yourself? Or are there others in your circle who are aware? So this October 11th, Happy National Coming Out Day, and a shoutout to the Community — we’re still here, and we’re still Queer, we just might be a little more tired. And for those of you not feeling so happy or lacking the ability or safety to come out just yet, that’s OK — no pressure…ever. My inbox is open.
