Last month, I had the privilege of presenting with Amanda Zagari of Dickie, McCamey & Chilcote at the Pennsylvania Society of Anesthesiologist’s Tri-Alliance Symposium. We offered a dual perspective on the medical malpractice litigation process and issues particular to anesthesiologists. To our surprise, the topic prompting the most lively discussion was informed consent. Pennsylvania’s MCARE Act mandates that a physician has a duty to obtain informed consent before performing surgery, including the related administration of anesthesia. 40 P.S. 1303.504. Until recently, physicians were not permitted to delegate this task. In 2021 the MCARE Act was amended to allow physicians to delegate the task to “a qualified practitioner,” explicitly including CRNAs. This new rule reflects the increased (and increasING) role advanced practice providers are playing in patient care. Should patients and patient advocates be bothered by this change? I believe this question is a bit of a red herring, but a predicate to a more important one. If I feel comfortable with an APP performing my procedure, I shouldn’t have any issue with them explaining it to me. But perhaps the question we really should be asking is how comfortable we are with the seemingly ever-expanding scope of practice by non-physicians. Will the trend continue or will we see a reverse-course towards increasingly physician-led care? On-staff at West Boca Medical Center & Delray Medical Center   Can you share a memorable experience or mentor who played a significant role in shaping your journey as a woman physician?   I had the privilege of training under two female vascular surgeons, Dr. Grace Huang and Dr. Huong Truong, who were technically excellent, great mentors and educators, and always went above and beyond for their patients and trainees.   In today's medical landscape, how do you perceive the role of women physicians evolving, and what positive changes have you observed over the years?   There are more women represented in the field of medicine and surgery, which has historically been male dominated. Not only are more women being accepted to medical school, but are also opting to enter surgical subspecialties. It’s great to see women physicians more accepted as the face or center of the patient care team.   What advice would you give to aspiring women physicians who may be hesitant to pursue a career in medicine due to gender-related concerns or stereotypes?   Anyone interested in a career in medicine should do so, and gender-related concerns or stereotypes should not preclude them from pursuing their passion.   How can the medical community foster a more inclusive and supportive environment for women physicians, ensuring their success and well-being in their careers?   The medical community can foster an inclusive and supportive environment for women physicians by treating them the same as their male counterparts. Another peer reviewed publication! This paper examines the guidelines to stop GLP1-RA prior to surgery that were provided by the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) based on "anecdotal reports." This paper shines a spotlight on the big issue in healthcare today: the evidence gap. Now more than ever, more evidence is needed for care. Evidence is the key piece of decision-making that's missing - the evidence gap is real and #AtroposHealth is here to solve it. Atropos Health provides real-world evidence (RWE) rapidly to inform recommendations in a publication grade observational study. Healthcare leaders no longer need to rely on anecdotal information. The conclusion from the study: Using GLP-1s the week of surgery did not increase the risk for any of the six possible side effects the ASA predicted. The design of the question and framing to the larger topic was completed by the Atropos Health Diabetes Research Collaborative led by Dr. David Klonoff, a member of the Atropos Health Clinical Advisory Board (CAB). Two weeks ago, our Director Lana Kane joined Dr. Brian Kinirons, Medical Director of National Doctors Training & Planning (NDTP) at The 20th National Health Summit where the panel delved into the critical workforce challenges facing Ireland's healthcare sector over the next two decades.
