A recent breakthrough in the field of chemistry could revolutionise medicine, agriculture, and industrial chemistry. A new AI tool, reported in Science, can determine the structure of small molecules even with incomplete data. This advancement allows chemists to make progress with a wide range of essential compounds and represents a game changer. By finding patterns in data previously considered insufficient, this AI accurately predicts molecular structures, significantly reducing the need for extensive data. This mirrors the transformative impact AI has had on protein structure prediction and promises to speed up the development of new drugs, herbicides, and catalysts. Currently, the tool works with molecules containing up to about 50 atoms, but there is hope it will soon handle larger molecules, broadening its applications and benefits. #ArtificialIntelligence #Chemistry #Innovation #Science

In our mission to Unleash Nature Sustainably, one of our main goals is to develop new, derived natural solutions that can replace synthetic ingredients. However, a one on one replacement for synthetic ingredients with a derived natural alternative is almost impossible. Unless... we manage to identify combinations of derived natural polymers that can match the profile of synthetic ones. And that's exactly what we did. Through the help of AI, Cargill scientists analyzed an incredible amount of data, aiming at identifying a successful combination of derived natural polymers with the same properties as a synthetic one. The first result of that research is Actigum™ Care, a new derived natural rheology modifier based on a combination of starch and sclerotium gum, that not only matches, but surpasses the performance of its synthetic counterparts. New technology alert! Introducing IMPRINT, a cell-free method for rapidly methylating DNA to increase its transformation into bacteria. https://lnkd.in/dNFpDxnj The vast world of bacteria holds great potential to develop novel products in diverse fields, from sustainable chemical factories to living therapeutics that combat disease and promote well-being in humans as well as in agricultural crops. However, studying and engineering bacteria is largely hindered by an inability to deliver DNA into their cells, often due to the presence of bacterial defense systems that eliminate foreign DNA. As a result, current efforts mostly rely on the few "model" bacteria such as E. coli that can be engineered -- but what if we can tap into the multitude of other bacteria that possess unique and often superior traits specific to their environment? Using IMPRINT, we show increased DNA transformation in relevant pathogenic (Salmonella) and probiotic (Bifidobacteria) strains of bacteria, develop a method to quickly decipher the "optimal" methylation pattern on transformed DNA for a particular strain, and illustrate how the boost in transformation facilitates the use of high-throughput screens in "non-model" bacteria. It's been super fun and rewarding to lead this project and see it develop over the years into something useful, and it took a full team effort! What does protein engineering have to do with #supplychain? Superficially nothing, but both have problems that can entail modeling time series data to solve. One key to addressing challenging business problems with #ai and #datascience is to abstract the problem, which means stripping out the business context to find the best way to represent the problem mathematically. Once that representation is done, methods from a wide variety of fields may be applicable. When I went into health care, Maarten Oosten advised me I'd encounter many revenue management problems. I was confused, because I went to work for a nonprofit health care system, until I realized his point - problems like airline and hotel room pricing have mathematical similarities to operating room or MRI scheduling. Both have high fixed costs, perishable assets (the value of an unsold airplane seat or hour in the OR both expire), capacity limits, etc. So I was excited when my Kinaxis colleague Sébastien Ouellet told me he'd be presenting this week at the Protein Engineering Summit sponsored by the Cambridge Healthtech Institute. His talk, "Utilizing Deep Learning Protein Representations to Predict Recombinant Expression," is not focused on supply chains. And yet his work, based on a paper he published on a novel machine learning approach combining time series-inspired methods and embeddings, is an abstraction that may have multiple applications outside biotechnology. This week Seb will learn from others outside his day-to-day work in supply chain and they will learn from him. The complications of clean up after the Valdez oil spill lingered for years, vexing petroleum engineers, until someone with a background in construction brought forth a solution from mixing concrete. Cross-disciplinary interaction fosters learning. We talk a lot in supply chain about agility, but the kind of intellectual agility Seb and our colleagues have is equally critical and is why Kinaxis has submitted so many patents in AI.
