With the latest in supply chain disruptions, many manufacturers are asking themselves “can #AdditiveManufacturing deliver the materials I need?” The answer might surprise you. As Dennis Scimeca shares, “the first step to considering additive is wrapping your head around the #materials questions.” Which materials work best for one’s purposes is determined based on what type of #3DPrinting technology is being harnessed to deliver on these products. It’s important to think outside of the box regarding what materials are needed. Thank you IndustryWeek for covering such a critical topic in additive manufacturing.

One of the best things about AM is that it is truly “demand pull” manufacturing. Years in conventional manufacturing as part of the automotive supply chain taught me that while end users pay lip service to lean manufacturing, what this really means is that inventory simply accumulates as you move up the supply chain. Conventional manufacturing often requires complex tooling and machine set-ups with specific raw materials so that production runs are by necessity long. AM eliminates the need for set-ups and uses the most general-purpose raw materials. In our AM plant, the ONLY raw material is powder and parts are shipped the day they come out of the machines. No finished parts are ever stocked.
