Some other Swinhay House fun facts for the list, maybe more my personal memories of its germination in the very late 1990s... 1. I recall my dad, David, designing this around our kitchen table on Sundays with Sir David, his client. They had such fun! It was a lovely relationship to witness as a school leaver, before I chose to pursue architecture. It was a true collaboration, between an architect and a truly exceptional engineer. 2. I worked on some of the drawings and models during university holidays; unsurprisingly it was a long time from first discussions to planning approval - it spanned my degree, perhaps longer. 3. We held pre-app in the empty cattle sheds, by the slurry conveyor. The site was a veal farm; two huge slurry pits were located where the big glazed winter garden is, and the garden this photo is taken from. I think the LPA quite enjoyed the story of transformation set out for them. 4. This was perhaps the first non-Traditional design approved under Gummer's Law, PPG7 as was then. Sally Findlay's starfish was about the same time, and I think Fielden Clegg had one approved about then too. (Its not a contest, just an interesting time). 5. The LPA referred it to the Royal Fine Arts Comission for comment on design quality; it was answered by CABE who took over that role, who called the scheme a "breath of fresh air, truly in the spirit of" the PPG7 clause, referring to the prevalence of neoclassical schemes preceding it. Sustainability in precinct planning is more than Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) and trees. In our projects we will also always try to propose paths along topographical lines to reduce natural stresses, to retain all existing buildings, to insert new buildings into the damaged places, to set a framework for nature to regenerate, to educate visitors about natural systems, sustainable strategies and indigenous culture, to connect canopy across the precinct and beyond, to make walkable precincts at gradients of less than 1:21, to set building zones and envelopes to facilitate the best orientation for buildings for passive design...there’s more of course.
