Building a good network is more an art than a science, sometimes involving some creativity. That’s where this week’s topic, unconventional networking, comes in. In our latest video, we reflect on several ways that can sometimes end up resulting in incredibly meaningful relationships, even though that may not be the initial objective. Think twice–what are other networking approaches that you’ve inadvertently identified?

This week’s post was inspired by a recent experience in particular, when I met PD scientist Nirel Salazar (Rillera) at yoga. We started talking because I noticed her shirt from a former biotech employer! We had a fabulous conversation after the class concluded. Because we both have a passion for wellness and mindfulness, along with shared similar work experiences in our industry, I felt we were able to instantly connect on a deeper level that isn’t always possible in more traditional networking settings. For example, we discussed the toll that a failed experiment or study can have on a team and how that can impact morale and even self-esteem. I know these types of situations don’t present themselves every day, but even a couple years ago, I don’t think I would’ve pushed myself outside my comfort zone to say hi to Nirel. Now, we’re in touch and looking for opportunities to explore the intersection of mindfulness X biopharma comms. 💡This experience has reinforced for me the value of being open to new connections—and networking—even in settings unlikely to be deemed traditionally professional.

💬 In short, we discussed last week that there are benefits of stepping outside one’s comfort zone to embrace the potential of unexpected networking opportunities. Key takeaway: Openness to networking in everyday situations can forge significant, unexpected professional relationships.
