In response to the rising number of wheelchair users, our study focuses on optimizing wheelchair-mounted assistive robots for essential activities of daily living (ADLs). Using advanced genetic algorithms, we've fine-tuned robots with 5, 6, and 7 degrees of freedom (DoFs) to cover key ADL workspaces while ensuring singularity and collision avoidance. Excitingly, our optimized designs show significant coverage improvements, offering tailored support where it's needed most. Which inertia do you have to use to predict the outcome of an impact for a torque-controlled robot with flexible joints? The answer to this question has implications for impact-aware robot control as well as safety in physical human-robot interaction (pHRI). I started looking at this problem with Vincent Padois at UPMC in Paris in 2017 (now he is at INRIA Bordeaux). We've managed to experimentally validate that fully rigid robot models combined with nonsmooth impact laws provide useful prediction, as long as you correct the motor inertia with the torque-control gains. This work was was conducted in collaboration with Franka Emika (now Franka Robotics) in the context of the I.AM. H2020 Project . The work has been just published in IEEE R-AL. Highlighting Innovative Mobile Robot Design at Robotrix Hackathon I'm excited to share our team's project from the recent IEEE NITK Robotrix hackathon! We tackled the challenge of programming a mobile robot that navigates autonomously through checkpoints while balancing a red ball on an integrated Stewart Platform. The Stewart Platform is a fascinating mechanism in mobile robotics. Its unique design allows for 6 degrees of freedom (DoF) movement, enabling precise control of a platform's position and orientation. This opens doors for novel applications in various fields. Our approach involved integrating a Stewart Platform with a differential drive robot. This fusion presented a unique challenge: deriving the inverse kinematics to control the Stewart Platform's actuators. We successfully addressed this by implementing a PID control system for point-to-point navigation, ensuring the robot's autonomous maneuvering with maximized accuracy. #Robotrix #IEEE #MobileRobots #StewartPlatform #Hackathon
