Working in Philadelphia and beyond for a future where all people can thrive and we don't destroy the planet in the process.
The deadline is a little tight on this, but the team at Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Stewardship Division, led by my amazing wife Elisa Ruse-Esposito, is hiring for Community Initiative Specialists. The date to apply is Sept. 27th. But if you're looking for a rewarding career that builds community and gets you outside in nature, this is for you. Below is the link as well as a primer on navigating the city hiring process. https://lnkd.in/eit-Geip Applying for Civil Service Positions at the City of Philadelphia Application process To be considered for an open civil service position with the City of Philadelphia, you must submit an application to be considered to take the test for the specific job title. Once the position is posted you’ll follow instructions to apply. When crafting your resume (and cover letter, if applicable) clearly demonstrate how your experience or education directly relates to the position requirements. After you submit your application, the City’s central HR will review your application. If your experience and education is found to match the job requirements, HR will approve you to move forward in the hiring process. If HR emails you informing you that your experience or education do not meet the requirements, but you believe they do, reply to the email clearly stating how your experience meets each of the job requirements listed. Once approved by the city’s central HR, they will instruct you about next steps. The next steps may include a written multiple choice test, an oral exam, a practical exam, such as a tree climbing test, or no further testing. Your performance on these tests or your resume alone will be scored and you will receive a rank on a list of all the applicants. The list is active for 3 years. Any city department that hires from that list can ask to interview you when a budgeted position opens (for example Community Initiatives Specialists work at City Planning, the Water Department, the Library and Parks & Rec (TreePhilly and Park Stewardship teams)). This interview process is done by the department’s HR, and they can only choose from the available list of applicants. Applicants can only decline 3 interviews before being removed from the list. You can submit a “statement of unavailability” that can limit the time you are available for the position, or the departments you are interested in being hired by.

Community Managers aren't...❌ While it's true that CMs need to be generalists and generally well-rounded, it's important to set expectations about what roles they're going to fill in your organization. There continues to be a fair amount of confusion in the market (based on looking at job postings). Here's our definition: "An individual responsible for fostering a healthy community environment by modeling behaviors through direct engagement with members, making important policy decisions, and serving as a liaison between the community and the governing organization." Project Manager | Building Engaged and Thriving Communities | Expert in Social Media Strategy & Event management
Numbers don’t lie in community management. While others are focusing on vanity metrics: • You’re tracking Engagement Rate • You’re monitoring Member Growth • You’re analyzing Retention Rate No one sees the deeper metrics. The sentiment you measure. The response times you optimize. They don’t know about: • The engagement strategies you’re refining • The new members you’re onboarding • The satisfaction levels you’re boosting And that can be *your* edge too. While they guess, you measure. While they overlook, you adjust. While they assume, you know. The most successful communities are built on data. The healthiest communities thrive on metrics. Don’t just manage. Optimize your community. And when you’re ready to take your community to the next level? Do it with these key metrics. P.S. Please repost for someone to learn.
