Our best wishes for a healthy and prosperous 2024 to all our MBitioneers, their family and friends, and everyone else who already helped in making last year amazing 🤗🎆🎉🍾 Let's make 2024 a year of growth and, of course: ambitious innovation! 💡 New products, a steady list of ever-growing software integration projects with Mercedes-Benz, and a software development campus will bring new challenges and opportunities! Just like in 2023, we at MBition will be pushing the automotive software innovations forward, alongside our worldwide Mercedes-Benz RD colleagues! With the overall economic outlook still being murky and unpredictable, there is certainly no guarantee for success. But then again, there never was. When MBition set out to revolutionize the way software is integrated and played onto #MercedesBenz infotainment systems in 2017, it was just the vision of a few Managers and Software Engineers. Driven by the certainty that more daring and creative approaches were necessary, in order to push infotainment systems into the connected digital future that consumers were already demanding. Now, just 5 years later, #MBition is very nearly 1.000 #MBitioneers strong and our direction of success has been firmly established. While at the same time, the scope of our involvement into more areas of development has seen the overall complexity of this operation shoot up exponentially. In keeping with this expansion of tasks, the teams had to grow rapidly too. Now, in 2024, our office space will keep up with them as well! 🏗️ And with the launch of our first, completely in-house-developed infotainment system, for the brand-new Mercedes-Benz E-Class last year, our list of support-tasks, rollouts and latest Over-The-Air updates is only set to expand in 2024 📋 And we'll start this year with a bang, even after New Year's is already over: Stay tuned for some announcements at CES Las Vegas, next week! 🎇

🤔 SDV – Compete on User Functionalities and Services and cooperate on Base Technology I strongly believe that the increasing dominance of software development in creating value for the customer will dramatically increase the speed and significance of innovation and make competition more fierce. Following is not possible anymore and the winners will be the companies who innovate fast and user-centric. In this context, cooperation on a common operating system for Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs) could in my view bring significant advantages for respective OEMs and the related automotive industry. By standardising the base software, development resources could be used more efficiently on user-centric functionalities and services, and the complexity of system integration could be reduced. This would not only shorten innovation cycles but also lower costs. Two prominent views which seem to point in this direction: Lynn Longo, emphasised as former CTO of Cariad the importance of open collaboration: "Open collaboration with other developers is central to a functioning digital ecosystem: The software-driven car as the most complex mobile device benefits particularly from the cooperation of the open-source community". Mike Milinkovich, Executive Director of the Eclipse Foundation, points out that "The entire automotive software ecosystem is undergoing a rapid and fundamental change. A common platform and tools that the entire industry can both use and co-develop is needed to accelerate this transformation". Open-source software development and a common base software is not only accelerating development but also strengthening the competitiveness of participating automotive companies. By differentiating through app functionalities, the automotive industry could continue to serve their brand identity and specific customer needs while benefiting from the advantages of a common base software. This is also opening the door for new business models where additional features and services are offered through software updates. Overall, a common operating system for SDVs could strengthen the respective automotive industry by promoting collaboration, reducing development costs, and increasing innovation power. 👉 My opinion: Better to focus competition on user functionalities and services than to compete on enabling base technology. 🤔 Seems obvious, cooperation is taking place, but is it sufficient? #SDV #OpenSource #NewMobility #UserCentric

Let's ditch software outsourcing and focus on core teams... "BMW and Tata Technologies are one of many partners that are teaming up in collaborate on software-defined vehicles,  while Porsche also announced a similar software development partnership last month with Silicon Valley-based start-up Applied Intuition."  Automotive Dive Eric Walz In the world of automotive software development, splitting teams across different sites can really slow things down. McKinsey & Company found out how much this affects work: When we add just one more site, productivity can fall by about 11%. More sites mean more drops, but it gets a bit less with each new site, with a loss of about 5% each time. Starting at 100% productivity with one site, it goes down to 72% by the time you have seven sites. This isn't just about teams being far apart. It also has to do with having more people, which often happens when you expand to more places. As leaders in making car software, we need new ways to keep teams working well together, even when they're not in the same place. Better tools for managing projects and staying connected could be the answer, but also focus on a firm responsible for a development area.
