Why don't security engineers just recruit other security engineers? Well, they do (𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘵: 𝘪𝘵'𝘴 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘥 𝘢 𝘳𝘦𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘢𝘭). But this was a post I saw a few weeks ago, asking if there's a need for agency recruiters if folks actively network for themselves and others (especially since engineers typically are friends with engineers of similar domains and stacks). 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘺, 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘴𝘯'𝘵 𝘢 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘨𝘶𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘨𝘰-𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘳𝘶𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘵. Which in theory, works...maybe? But I don't know a ton of engineers that want to deal with... • Negotiating $ especially when a colleague is offered significantly more than you (or worse, really lowballed) • The fun of scheduling panel interviews • Relaying some brutal feedback from a hiring team (especially when someone thought they did really well) • Rejecting 90%+ of the people you submit • And the list goes on Ultimately, as a lot of us know quite well, job hunting sucks. And even more sucky that those bad experiences are then associated with the colleague or friend that got you in that position in the first place. It's like asking a friend to be your realtor or your lawyer? Stuff can just get messy.

Have you ever decided to work with a recruiter solely because they claimed to perform "technical tests" prior to submitting resumes to you? We were excited to work with a potential client and it's look like we're going to lose the business for this reason. If you ask me, these are largely a gimmick for recruiting firms to win new business, but I'm curious if you've made a decision based on such tests and if you have any experience with them. I think a highly intelligent, highly motivated, specialized technical recruiter can screen for technical skills to a sufficient level that these tests shouldn't be necessary. Additionally, the more steps (hoops to jump through) you add into the interview process early on, the more likely you are to lose the most highly qualified candidates that have many career options. If you're a hiring manager for the SOC or a SOC Analyst please take a second to think about how you're conducting technical interviews. Too often we get caught up in black and white interview questions (ie What Port does this protocol use, What file path could I find this in.) that have a clear right and wrong answer. I have a rule I try to follow when asking questions, if google can answer the question definitively I don't ask it. We should be walking candidates through their thought process. Seeing if they understand IR fundamentals, seeing if they can explain their process in detail. Much like when we're investigating an incident "behavior" can tell us a lot more about a candidate than a simple "stump the chump" style line of questioning can. (Looks at it as an IOB vs IOC level of value). For analysts who are stuck in these rapid fire technical interviews don't be afraid to say I don't know, but here's what I do know about the overarching concept. "I don't remember what the port number is for RDP, but I can tell you why it's bad if I'm seeing it unexpectedly in our SIEM logs." Something for everyone to take a look at in their hiring prep and their interviewing process. #cyber #soc #interviews
