Bioremediation & Biorecycling for the Circular Economy, a great SynBioBeta panel curated by Katherine "Kit" McDonnell. Thoughts that stuck for me: 1) The novelty value of “sustainability” as a marketable advantage, which made lower performance/experience an acceptable trade-off, has worn off both among corporates and end-customers. Future materials/products/services/experiences will need to offer superiority (or at least parity) in performance/experience AND have circularity built-in to successfully compete with the status quo. Branding matters as the value signal here. 2) In a world moving toward “valorizing” waste streams and circular economies, what should “waste” be called? Waste is a man-made side effect of wasteful industrial fabrication, but nature, a closed-loop ecosystem, knows no waste. 3) Synbio is a critical accelerant to our world’s transition toward circularity, transforming inert waste into material value. And lastly, a fun and dizzying visualization question by Kit: “How many small circles are circling on the inside of the one global circle of circularity”? Thanks to Eben Bayer, Molly Morse, Moji Karimi, Joshua Haslun for a great discussion. #synbio #circularity #sustainability #circulareconomy #regenenerative #syntheticbiology #innovation #SynBioBeta2024  #branding
