Is a college degree worth it? 😞 55% of the conversation was negative 😐 38% was neutral 😀 7% was positive The public believes the purpose of higher ed is to gain value from the degree, and they're regularly questioning the value of post-secondary degrees, whether the outcomes are "worth it,” and what they gain. Our research explores more of the conversation and how leaders can rebuild trust. https://hubs.li/Q02tCyzR0

How are you setting strategies in higher education? Are you pointing to a single plan, framework, or process? Did you know that there are benefits of each department/team having its own strategy? It's a common belief that a single, high-level strategy provides ample guidance for all departments. However, this approach often faces the risk of misinterpretation and failure in delivery. Here's why each department needs its own strategy: 1️⃣ High-level strategies can be translated into actions in various ways. Each department needs a unique strategy to align its actions and goals effectively. 2️⃣ If each department has its own strategy, they can develop a clear vision of success and a roadmap to achieve it. 3️⃣ Individual strategies ensure effective implementation, reducing the risk of strategic goals being lost in translation. Allowing departments to set their own strategies not only enables more targeted and efficient implementation but also fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility. "#Governments and #universities across the #GlobalSouth are especially vulnerable. They are lured by a customized ranking for their #country or region. In turn, ranking organizations prey on their anxieties and their desire to reach a wider audience, build “world-class universities,” and recruit #international students and investors." Professor Ellen Hazelkorn if I might add they also prey on the lack of data and data reporting in the region. When they issue a score, you cannot compare and contrast it against valid data from governments, independent entities etc... In that perspective, they become the only source of benchmarking. "There are growing allegations that advice leads to improved #rankings". If you look at the aberrations in some values (especially survey results) I believe we can safely say it is more than allegations! The "obsession" with rankings didn't only benefit ranking companies, it created a network of consultants who "advise" universities on gaming rankers (not that they are angels, they are deceived, maybe they let themselves be deceived). "Strategic use of data is here to stay but without grappling with issues of data ownership, governance and regulation at a multilateral level, troublesome problems of full transparency, accountability, and ethical standards will remain." The hope is that, with all these governments investing so much on rankings, rankers are stretching themselves too thin and will not be able to please everyone. After all, there are only a limited amount of spots at the top, most of which are dominated by traditional powerhouses...
🌎 The three main global higher education rankings—Times Higher Education, QS World University Rankings, and 𝗔𝗥𝗪𝗨—have become a profitable enterpri💲e, offering consulting, data analysis, and benchmarking services. This raises questions about potential conflicts of interest and the ethics of the ranking system. Read the full article by Professor Ellen Hazelkorn and Philip Altbach 👇 https://lnkd.in/eu7J4rWu
