Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed a 𝗦𝗜𝗚𝗡𝗜𝗙𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗡𝗧 𝗗𝗘𝗖𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗘 in the quality of design drawings over the past three years? Design drawings that were once more comprehensive and complete now seem fragmented and contradictory. It seems like it’s become increasingly difficult for architects and structural engineers to align work within their teams. I’ve been thinking about what might be causing this, and it occurred to me that it could be linked to the trends of remote and hybrid work that emerged during and after the COVID pandemic. Has the lack of face-to-face interaction and the natural collaboration that occurs in an office setting caused these issues? #construction #steeldetailing #steelfabrication
Yes, and they keep getting worse. I see 100% CD drawings all the time, but they are no where near construction ready. They are more like concept drawings were 10 years ago.
It was garbage even before covid. Technical drawings are not taught in school, companies don't care, drawings are just some bulk which have to be cranked out. Those guys who actually understand dimensioning, tolerances, manufacturing operations and site erection are very rare unicorns.
I haven't seen a 100% construction set in the past year Igor! Working with these permit or bid sets will cause lot of traction in the dynamic project execution phase.
I've noticed this for a few years. Perhaps what you'd get when technology keeps progressing and prices keep going up simultaneously.
Well... Is not related to remote/hybrid work, is not related to 3D or school system... Is related to the designers who are doing it... When you pay less and less and you expect same quality or better this is what is happening... Cherry picking is great for a certain period of time in certain industries but eventually s**t WILL hit the fan...
Id have to agree, even in the civil engineer space, it has progressively been worse and worse. Quality it seems is a thing of the past these days. Details and accuracy is cruicial.
I see a few reasons for the low quality of the drawings but there is one important reason - fascination with 3D pictures: too much reliance on 3D software that still can't catch nuances that experienced designers can recognize while doing regular drafting. If a designer doesn't know construction materials well enough and has limited knowledge of construction technology, construction physics, or chemistry he just would not pay attention to the necessity of providing certain details, details that 3D software generates have lack of information
No, I don't believe it has anything to do with the pandemic or pandemic response, although I can see why you might think this was the problem. It's a convenient scapegoat. I think we have developed a twisted evaluation of people that is based upon an ability to speak, rather than actual ability to do the job. With this comes an implicit imposter syndrome that protects against being exposed. The kind of exposure that might come from people with a higher level of ability. These people are naturally and subliminally disenfranchised.
Once structural drawings were created, treated & celebrated as art. Currently with all smart.... smart.... devices the Engineers, designers, drafters become dumb and drawings are just a mere product just for project bundle. Most enggs & drafters get instruction to copy past from old data/project.
