Lets talk about how we got this shot: We needed a way to effectively display the tacking improvements without budget for motion graphics so we decided to make this.. Now of course the car is not on the track at the same time as James Sherwood-Smith. We started off with James delivering his lines on the track, making not of exactly here he stood. Next step was to not move the camera at all, keeping the camera in the same place is the key to this effect. The Aston Martin could then go as fast as we wanted as it was the only thing on the track, having the car come at speed really helps to sell this effect. It took a few takes to get the car to stop in the exact spot but once it did all it takes in post is a simple mask with some colour correction to blend the two shots together and a few sound effects to sell really sell it. The final edit we actually needed to remove a few of the sound effects as the client felt it was to realistic! #videography #work #editing

Helping motion designers to build a successful business and career to give them freedom to do the things they love.
Hands up, Who's a self-taught motion designer? 👋 I've been hearing from many motion designers that they have imposter syndrome because they lack official qualifications in motion design. But the reality is that motion design is a still fairly new industry so I would bet most motion designers are self-taught. I studied Film Production at University, and only one of the modules was in After Effects. I am mainly self-taught because I learned most of what I know after my degree. Curious to see how others started and continue to learn motion design. #motiondesign #motiondesigners

Getting creative. One of the most important positions on a video shoot is the 1st AC. You might have seen this at the end of a movie's credits as "First Assistant Camera" or sometimes this position is called a "focus puller." it can be hard to explain to corporate clients why a "camera assistant" is needed on set. It can be misinterpreted as someone who just carries camera gear, or an unnecessary luxury. A "focus puller" sounds even more obscure. The vast majority of people are shocked to find out that professional cinema lenses don't have autofocus. After all, "my iPhone does, and my old camcorder did!" A focus puller's (or 1st AC) primary job is to use a controller wheel to manually track the focus point. Having a focus puller avoids the problems of autofocus when the camera is "seeking" back and forth for a focus point. He or she allows you to smoothly "rack focus" for one object or person to another without it feeling jarring. The 1st AC also handles the physical aspects of building up the camera for the specific configuration needed, like going from an interview setup onto a gimbal or jib. This allows the director, director of photography and the gaffer to plan out the next shot without wasting time. In short, a focus puller allows you to operate efficiently on set, when time is money. (And if the day's budget doesn't allow for a 1st AC, but your director knows how to pull focus, like Victory Ralston, then you can attach a focus wheel to her director's monitor and still get the shot!) #videoproduction #focuspuller
