TITLE:DANCE Are you a dancer? While some of us might answer an adamant “No!” to that question, we were all dancers at some point. In fact, as a three-week-old baby, you were already starting to sync up your movements to the beat of any music you heard. And even if you now identify as a klutz with two left feet, I’ll bet you have trouble staying completely still when you hear your favorite tune. Dancing is in our bones, and it’s more than just a fun form of entertainment, explain Julia F. Christensen and her colleagues in a 2017 paper. Cave art seems to suggest that humans were dancing as far back as 70,000 years ago, and it serves important functions for us. Dance transports us into a state of flow where we forget about our troubles, which is good for regulating our biological systems and nourishing our long-term health. At a deeper level, it’s a way of getting in touch with our bodies and our feelings, allowing us to “try on” different emotions and see how they feel. #snsinstitution #snsdesignthinkers #designthinking

1954: Helen Keller visits Martha Graham's dance studio in NYC (link in comments) Video Summary: Helen Keller has attended Martha Graham's recitals, but this is her first time at a studio rehearsal. Someone must spell the action into Helen’s hand, yet Helen perceives the rhythm and movement of the dancers through floor vibrations. Helen need not touch the drums to feel their vibrations. Though Helen has attended performances in a theater, it is only in a rehearsal room like this where she can discover the living pattern of the dance with her hands. Last week, I posed a three-part creativity exercise to explore the diverse ways we experience our imaginations. Recently, I was captivated by the video of Helen Keller above. Reflecting on how she experienced reality, I wondered how she experienced her inner world. Today, I’d like you to revisit those three prompts through the lenses of touch, movement, and location. PART 1 Mentally spell your name by imagining tracing the letters on a textured surface, such as sand or tree bark. Note what happens in your mind. PART 2 Scenario: Your new neighbor invites you to a housewarming party, and you need to bring your favorite homemade dessert. Pay attention to your movements while imagining making that recipe. PART 3 Pause for purposeful daydreaming with this Thought Cloud: If all your responsibilities and expenses were covered for one week, what radically new thing would you immerse yourself in learning? Now imagine where you would go to learn this new thing. Respond in the comments with where you imagined you were during each part. Also, share any insights on using your imagination through the lenses of touch and movement. Let's embark on a bit of collective mind traveling! #HellenKeller #MarthaGraham #imagination #innerworld #stateofmindbydesign #purposefuldaydreaming #cloudclub #YonderAIcollaboration #creativity #placebasedlearning

This is my second dance-related piece on Ziggy's Lament, following the first post a week or so ago... "Part of the problem of dance and dancing is that it’s all wrapped up with the who and what and how: Who dances? Performers, participants, peasants? People called ‘professional dancers’? Cheerleaders? All of us? What is dance anyway? Something we all do, all of the time? Or some of us, some of the time? Something nature does? Something we choose to do? Something our bodies need? Something we learn? How do we dance? Just by moving? With precision or abandon? Standing or sitting around? In ways prescribed by others? In ways taught by others? In ways our bodies need? All of this is an interdependent jumble. Dance can be a burst of radical freedom and showtime-on-pointe. It can be celebration, transformation, intoxication – even indoctrination. And everyone can dance… can’t they? Well, interdependence is always more complex and complicated than what appears on the surface. This dance thing – this music thing – is always tangled up in other stuff. The social, cultural, political stuff that tells us who the ‘normies’ are in any given sphere. And who holds privilege, and who has to resort to transgression and dancing in corners." Read the full post at the link below... and you can read more music related writing and reflections at Ziggy's Lament...

It took her 6 months of gathering courage to take her first dance class. She’s around the age of 30, and felt the bar was high. Why? ↓ She didn’t feel physically fit to survive through a dance class. Along with remembering all the steps. It opened my eyes, and I found different “excuses” by interviewing others: - I don’t feel physically fit enough to survive through a dance class. - I’m bad at remembering steps and choreography. - I don’t like to see myself in the mirror. - I’m scared I’ll be stared at. So it was time to find ways to make these classes seem less daunting from the outside. Which is a challenge because: 1. You want to show experienced dancers that your studio is a good place to develop their skills. 2. You want to have an influx of guest teachers who need to be inspired by your students. 3. It’s not always in your power to reach everybody that is thinking about joining. But there are some things that you can do to lower the bar without diminishing your brand as a dance studio: → Make all of your classes visible on social media. → Do active outreach on all your social media profiles. → Teach your current students to be welcoming for newbies. → Work on showcasing the process in class, not just the final recital. → Create a marketing funnel made for first-timers that addresses their worries. Want to learn more about this process? I am currently applying these strategies at two different dance schools, follow along for more. P.S. She started with one class a week and is currently doing 6. 💃 🪩+🪩+🪩+🪩+🪩+🪩+🪩+🪩 Hey, I’m Joey. It’s my mission to bring breath back into the dance industry, Starting at the studio’s that make us.
