This Friday, at the Feria de Abril (Sevilla) 💃 , I had the opportunity to experience something revelatory that I want to share with my LinkedIn network, especially those in the cosmetic industry.
Amidst laughter and Sevillanas, I was introduced to a colleague from the same industry. Upon discovering our professional connection, she asked me which company I worked for: I mentioned that I work at a private label factory. To this, the person responded with a gesture that suggested some disdain (to use an euphemism), regarding the company she worked for as if our work was of a lower level within the sector. In response to her reaction, I proudly explained that we collaborate with renowned international brands, to which she replied that this was "the worst of all."
This exchange made me reflect not only on the lack of courtesy in her comment (it might be because of too much rebujito) but also on a broader and more significant issue: the perception of own brands in our industry. Some traditional brands tend to believe that they are the only ones innovating and offering quality products, but the reality of the market is changing. The "white label" is no longer just about copying or offering mediocre shelf products. In many cases, these brands are outselling the so-called A brands.
Outsourcing innovation to private label (PL) manufacturers is redrawing the lines of what it means to innovate in cosmetics. It is no longer exclusive to those with large R&D budgets. This, I believe, is what truly frightens some in the sector.
This encounter at the fair was a reminder that innovation can come from anywhere and that underestimating the less visible players in the market can be a mistake.
PS: the woman in front of me in the photo is a friend of mine, she just made me laugh. Well, like the other woman actually. 😉
