We don't think we cheerlead enough! 📣 So many companies are doing some amazing things, so it's important to spotlight them and cheer them on. This time we've chosen to spotlight a fellow B Corp (it is nearly B Corp Month after all): Do Nation! What do they do in 8 words? They help to engage people in meaningful actions! Now you know we love a good starter story 📖: Their Founder & CEO Hermione Taylor cycled from London to Morocco in 2009 and instead of asking for sponsors with cash, she asked for sponsors with simple, sustainable actions. By cycling to work or eating less meat they saved the equivalent of 84 flights from London to Morocco!✈️ It was during this endeavour that Hermione saw the shift in people's attitudes and since then Do Nation have worked with over 500 organisations across 100 countries, with nearly 170,000 people having pledged. That means they are saving the equivalent of 287,089 flights from London to Paris worth of carbon. (With this figure growing daily!) How do they do what they do?🤔 They use behaviour science and game design to motivate employees to pledge those everyday actions! (Don't know about you but we're intrigued!) Yes, huge thanks to Pierre-Marie for a very clear overview on the role of predictive and generative AI in (Major Donor) fundraising. My key takeaways: 🔷 Dear board members, directors and managers: Stop overthinking and start strategizing, because your employees are already using GenAI tools. (So are your kids, in case you haven’t noticed yet.) AI is here to stay and will change the way we all work. 🔷When you ask the software to help you with your work, bear in mind that it will spill out the answer, which it ‘thinks’ is the most tailored to your needs. You still have to look at it and adjust and feed the software, so that it can help you better next time. 🔷Be aware of biased or fake answers. The tool obviously doesn’t know the truth, but it is confident that it does ;). It doesn’t have self-confidence problems, so challenge its views and pay attention. 🔷Use predictive AI in your organisation! It helps more with mass fundraising, but it also gives you support with individual fundraising. 🔷 Yes, it’s very important to be aware of what you are doing with your data. Integrated AI in your products shouldn’t be able to give the data you feed it with to third-party software. If you use third-party tools, encode/mask sensitive data. 🔷 LLM are great to summarize data from your CRM. This might help you for meetings, phone calls etc. 🔷 This is from me: Just because you know how to ride a bus, it doesn’t make you a bus driver. In my experience, the problem with NGOs is often that they don’t feel it’s necessary to invest in expert knowledge when it comes to tech. When I joined the Hempel Foundation, I didn't know that we shared birthdays. Today marks my 50th birthday...and it is also the 75th anniversary of the Hempel Foundation! Also, when I joined the Hempel Foundation I did not fully understand just how rewarding it would be to work for such a strategic, dynamic and impactful donor. There are so many rewarding elements of this job: seeing the pride from Hempel A/S employees when they hear how profits from their work supports philanthropic efforts around the world, seeing the positive impacts of our funding on high-biodiversity landscapes, seeing our partners on the ground being able to realise their plans and ambitions, and so much more. But to me, the most inspiring part of the Hempel Foundation is seeing the way our partnerships can achieve so much more than 'just' giving funding for projects. It's the way we help convene partners so they can create and implement a shared, bottom-up strategy. It's the way we champion local and national NGOs and other stakeholders, whose impact can be so wonderfully vast despite the fundraising challenges they often face. It's the way we help create momentum around a program of work that then grows and takes on a life of its own, attracting more donors and leading to real and lasting change on the ground. We see ourselves as more than just a donor, and our partners as more than just grant recipients - we are a team. This approach is made possible by the hard work of Hempel A/S employees, and by the leadership and Board of the Hempel Foundation, who are not content with 'business as usual' but who are always seeking new ways to have even greater impact.
