You might assume that the swallowing specialist's observation of your swallowing process is sufficient. However, it's often necessary to conduct further tests to identify the cause of your swallowing difficulties. This is due to the fact that the timing, strength, and coordination of swallowing are not visible to the naked eye. Studies have revealed that many people aspirate (a condition where food or liquid enters the lungs) without coughing, and this cannot be diagnosed during initial clinical swallowing evaluations.
