BREAKING: Today the Labour Government announced their new Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill. Keir Starmer said he wants to tackle the problems in our asylum system but Labour’s new bill will do NOTHING to address the root causes of forced displacement. Instead, cracking down on the methods refugees use to escape war and persecution will only make the journeys more dangerous. So long as torture exists, smugglers will continue to profit from desperate people who need a place of sanctuary.

This is indeed a missed opportunity to properly resource immigration, get rid of the asylum backlog, and process people in a more timely way. There is a better way! “Amy Fischer, the Director of Refugee and Migrant Rights at Amnesty International USA, said in a statement that Biden’s actions “set a dangerous international precedent.” “It’s deeply disappointing to see President Biden so hellbent on dismantling human rights for people seeking asylum and implementing policies that are plainly illegal under international and refugee law,” Fischer said. President Biden’s actions on Tuesday come as the numbers of unauthorized crossings in the U.S.-Mexico border have continued to go down in recent months, defying migration patterns. In April, U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported nearly 129,000 encounters (vs. 250K in DEC). Maribel Hernandez Perez, director of policy and government affairs for border and immigration at the ACLU, said Biden’s latest executive order will likely have a negative impact on the legal pathways of migration to the U.S. “Whenever you do anything that bars people from applying for asylum, what you're doing is in fact disrupting the legal pathways that people have,” Hernandez Perez said. She said Biden’s actions are a “missed opportunity” to take action to better manage illegal crossings at the Southern border. “That is just a repeat of what President Trump did, that is just a repeat of cruel policies,” Hernandez Perez said.” #immigrationreform #commonsense #humanity #openthedooor #economicgrowth #decliningbirthrates

Legal challenges are already on the horizon, questioning its compliance with international asylum laws. https://lnkd.in/g-FrYzUw What are your thoughts on balancing border security with human rights? Biden's new executive action which went into effect at 12:01 a.m. today Wednesday, June 5, is a no-win election year gimmick which now alienates his allies on the left, and does little to change the realities on the ground. People will still come because the incentive to migrate here has not changed since this country was founded. The main reason migrant apprehensions are down by more than 50% from the all-time highs recorded late last year, is because Mexico is stopping migrants from reaching the U.S. southern border. It is doubtful that Mexico will agree to take back the ones who do make it across, raising the specter that some migrants will still be released with court notices since certain countries, including China, limit or reject U.S. deportations. Plus, it was unlawful to ban asylum claims when Trump tried it unsuccessfully, and it still is because our current U.S. asylum law allows migrants on American soil to request humanitarian protection, even if they cross the border illegally. A change to our asylum policy authorizing U.S. immigration officials to deport large numbers of migrants without processing their asylum claims requires a bi-partisan legislative change which Republicans have effectively blocked. #ImmigrationPolitics #IHM2024

The recent #Conservatives government made much noise about curbing high #immigration numbers, including through their controversial #RwandaBill which saw over £700 million spent without ever being implemented. Despite this policymaking and hard-line rhetoric, the numbers of people arriving to the #UK in small boats has continued to climb, jumping from zero in 2017 to around 29,000 in 2023, with a further 13,000 people in the first six months of 2024. #Labour has stated its aim to tackle high immigration, specifically small boat arrivals, with measures including the creation of a new #BorderSecurity force, as well as a new agreement with the #EU to combat smuggling gangs. But these won’t be enough, argues Omar Hammoud Gallego on LSE British Politics and Policy. A new asylum pact with the EU along the lines of the #DublinRegulation is needed, as well as the creation of legal and safe routes for #asylumseekers and better planning for their care and integration into society once they arrive.
