On #WorldPressFreedomDay, we resoundingly condemn antidemocratic attacks against free and independent media and call for the immediate release of all media workers unjustly behind bars. Reporters Without Borders reports that over 500 journalists were arbitrarily imprisoned at the end of 2023. Leaders like Vladimir Kara-Murza, truth seekers like Evan Gershkovich, documentarians like Tsi Conrad, anticorruption advocates like José Rubén Zamora, & many others who speak truth to power deserve their freedom. Data from the International Federation of Journalists further shows that 120 media workers were killed in 2023, marking the deadliest year on record for journalists since 1992. 75% of these deaths were a result of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. But efforts to silence independent voices go beyond jail cells and battlefields. Foreign agents laws, state capture of public media, and disinformation all take aim at journalists’ democratic duties and have had a chilling effect on press freedom worldwide. #WPFD2024 is a prime opportunity for all of democracy’s advocates to redouble our efforts to create a world where free and independent media can safely report the truth.

More journalists have been killed in Gaza than in any other conflict. More children have been killed in Gaza than in any other conflict. There are more child amputees in Gaza than in any part of the world. More UN employees have been killed in Gaza than in any other conflict. More bombs have been dropped in Gaza than in any other conflict (if you take into account the size of Gaza, compared to Hiroshima, you get more of a sense of that the phrase ‘carpet-bombing’ means’) More Israeli hostages have been killed by the IDF than rescued by them. Palestinians have been driven out of their homes and kenneled into small parts of Gaza, systemically bombed and massacred in their shelters. Their homes pillaged, the land is being illegally annexed. Do you still think this is justified? Do you still think this is ‘complicated’? Do you still think that ‘this is what happens in wars?’ Do you still think that this has nothing to do with you? Dear Reader, this is a genocide. None of us are safe if all of us aren’t safe. None of us are free unless all of us are free.

Why is Israel killing journalists in Gaza? Because they are witnesses to war crimes, as foreign media has been banned from covering the war. Until today 108 journalists and media workers have been killed; 32 injured; 2 missing; and 49 arrested, without mentioning the multiple assaults, threats, cyberattacks, censorship, and killings of their family members.

The P@lest!n!an Journalists’ Syndicate reports that Israel has claimed the lives of over 100 P@lest!n!an journalists in G@ z@ in less than 100 days. This shocking toll surpasses the number of journalists killed during the entire six-year duration of World War II, which saw 69 journalists lose their lives. The data suggests that, on average, Israel has been responsible for more than one P@lest!n!an journalist’s death each day for over three months. The victims, undeterred by personal losses inflicted by I5r@el, continued to report on the dire situation in their communities. Despite facing the loss of loved ones, city-wide starvation, and the reduction of their neighborhoods to rubble, these journalists aimed to shed light on the horrors I5r@el was imposing on their communities, hoping that global awareness would prompt intervention. Stop the killings! We need to listen to each other. In order to do so, we need to get the unmodified, factual, and as unbiased information as possible to listen to, directly from the ground. This is why free press, free speech and free social media communication are so important. www.pax.ngo & www.convergence.ngo

Tunisia’s media is under severe pressure as the government escalates its crackdown on journalists in the lead-up to the presidential election. With increasing arrests and legal actions against media professionals, the country is witnessing a disturbing erosion of press freedom. Prominent journalists have been imprisoned, and critical voices are being systematically silenced, leading to a sharp decline in political debate and diversity of opinion on the airwaves. As the election approaches, concerns are mounting over the impact of this repression on the integrity of the electoral process and the future of free speech in Tunisia.
