I just added quite a few shares of stock in Lithos Group LTD (LITSF) to my portfolio, and I'm excited about the potential it holds. Lithos' patented lithium mining extraction methods have caught the attention of analysts, who anticipate other companies (like Albemarle and others) to follow suit. I recall an academic article (link in comments) comparing CAPEX requirements to build Thacker Pass and Rhyolite Ridge clay lithium mines in Nevada to the amount of battery grade lithium carbonate produced in pilot studies that proved technical feasibility - or proof of concept. The multiples of CAPEX to kg LCE were staggering. USD$2.3 to $2.4 billion CAPEX and rising with inflation to build Thacker Pass based on 24kg sample of battery grade lithium carbonate equates to roughly US$100 million CAPEX per kg of LCE sample. The conclusion of the article was that millions in CAPEX funding are needed for each kg of pilot sample produced. Not impossible. But very very ambitious indeed. And apparently depending on IRA / LPO / ATVM funding for up to 75% of the total. So US taxpayers are potentially on the hook for US$1.8 billion CAPEX funding of the unconventional, commercially unproven clay lithium mine at Nevada, USA … after lithium spot prices have crashed 85% in 14 months and price reporting agencies are forecasting an oversupply “glut” for 5 years now until 2029!!! We have recently seen better CAPEX : kg multiples from a DLE #brine lithium startup which needs US$1.38 billion CAPEX based on a 1,339 kg sample. That’s $1,030,619.87 CAPEX for each kg LCE sample produced. At $100 million, Thacker Pass is around 100 times or two orders of magnitude higher multiple. Standard Lithium wants over US$1 billion CAPEX for El Dorado / Smackover / LANXESS / Arkansas / LiSTR / Koch … SaltWorks / DLE lithium / Direct to Hydroxide / CCS … project. CTR wants over US$1 billion for geothermal power DLE lithium innovation precinct at Salton Sea. Has CTR ever produced any actual lithium carbonate? What’s the CAPEX : kg ratio if the kg = 0?
