Just like a real tornado, a twister made for the big screen can disrupt traffic. But when the weather chaos is on film, the roadway closures and detours are all controlled. For Universal Studios Hollywood new production “Twisters,” Paul Green, our Central Plains Construction Management Group Manager, worked closely with the company and Oklahoma Department of Transportation to create detour routes and #roadway closures to minimize traffic impacts surrounding #Oklahoma highways. It's always great to see high profile mass timber projects be featured in larger mainstream media as opposed to just trade related publications. The PDX (Portland, OR) airport project is a stunning example of beauty and exceptional collaboration within the mass timber supply chain and external stakeholders. I saw this project back in December 2021 as the 9 acres of mass timber roof were being constructed "onsite" about 0.5 miles from its final location by Timberlab. I was just as amazed then as I am now about this project and cannot wait to see the structure in its final form next year. The CBS video is a great introduction to mass timber but I do think the sustainability discussion was a bit too light. It did not dive deeper into the sustainability of keeping forestlands forested. Living here in Middle TN, I continue to see farmlands get sold and redeveloped into a new subidivisions, often named after the feature that was developed over. I see the suburbs in metro areas all over the U.S. continue to expand and take over open space. Please don't take this a rallying cry against growth and development. I know that towns and cities need to grow or else they can wither and die. Lack of access to cheap land drives up development costs. I also recognize that people need places to live as evidenced by our affordable housing crisis that seems to be occurring all over the U.S. Growth is a reality but here is another reality, land is an asset and for most landowners, these assets need to produce income in some form. We use land to grow our food and our forest landowners use their land to grow trees. These trees are just a crop with a much longer growth duration. As the great Kathryn Fernholz would say, "If you like apple trees, you need to buy apples. If you like seeing forests, buy forest products." This increases the viability for forest landowners to keep growing trees as opposed to selling off their lands, clear cutting their forests to convert to agriculture or more highways, roads and development. Seeing a clear cut forest is definitely a jarring visual impact but so is an open gravel quarry or mine pit. At least the forest can regenerate - with or without our help.
Mass timber construction has made it to broadcast television again! Check out this discussion on CBS Saturday news. Great interview with Christopher Evans of Timberlab regarding the groundbreaking PDX Terminal building! https://lnkd.in/ePqfmSAb

Built to Last Episode 2 - Indianapolis, Indiana's Washington Street Pumping Station: A 150-Year Legacy of Resilience and Sustainability https://lnkd.in/ganDPvFu Join me as I investigate the fascinating history of the Washington Street Pumping Station in Indianapolis, Indiana, the city's first water pumping station built in 1871. Using water from the Indiana Central Canal to power water wheels, the station showcased sustainable design before the era of electricity. In 1906-1908, it transitioned to turbines, maintaining a remarkable longevity with sustainable power until its decommissioning in 1969. The station's durability was evident in its survival through a 1927 tornado that damaged but did not defeat it. Constructed with ornate brickwork, copper downspouts, and a slate roof, the building exemplified "Built to Last" functionality. Join me in celebrating the Washington Street Pumping Station's nearly 100-year operation and its enduring impact on the City of Indianapolis's history. # BuiltToLast #InfrastructureLegacy #SustainabilityHistory

For the first time in six years, the number of units actively under construction in Seattle dipped under 20,000 — a far cry from last year's peak of nearly 29,000. The number of units delivering has been elevated but operators could see some relief soon as the pipeline slows. The number of starts in the first half of 2024 represented a drop of 40% from the first half of 2023 and the slowest start of the year since 2010. 🟢8,000 GreenLights across Europe!🟢 You must have seen them around (if you haven't, don't worry, you are likely to see them everywhere after reading this post): The iconic GreenLight towers by our portfolio company BauWatch. These outdoor video surveillance towers protect an area as large as 2,100 football fields every night. 🏗️Here is how it works: The GreenLight protects construction sites and other projects by offering prevention and detection. Most vandals are deterred by the bright green light and run away. Those who do make an attempt to break in are immediately detected. BauWatch's 24/7 emergency room views the razor-sharp video recordings online and ensures the culprits get arrested. More and more towers go up constantly - have you spotted one yet? #ConstructionSiteSecurity #CCTVTower #SafetyFirst
