What does PMO actually stand for? Apparently PMO means different things to different people and different organisations. I've heard about the following: - Project Management Office? - Program Management Office? - Portfolio Management Office? What does PMO mean to you and to your organisation? #agile #projectmanagement
It’s suppose to stand for Project Management Office and Portfolio management is a function of the PMO which includes program and project management. It’s my understanding that the different terms for PMO came about from people who didn’t understand the function of the PMO. You will also find some organizations will call a team of project managers a PMO but that is not accurate either as the PMO serves an alignment function of projects and programs to the strategic objectives of the organization and provides oversight on methodology practices and reporting to executives.

I was once a part of a PMO in the dark and distant past, because I was focused on and active in Process Improvement. Yet even then they had problems because my official job title was Senior Business Analyst. Back then PMO meant Project Management Office. Today I don't care what it means; it's irrelevant to me. We have no projects, no Project Managers and if we have any portfolios there's only one so it doesn't get mentioned as such.
Just add Agile before PMO and that’s it.
It used to mean project management office, and now we just rename it so we dint have to actually change anything about how our organisation functions to be “agile”

Before I joined my org’s PMO (P is for “Program”), I thought it meant “Paper Management Office”… 🤭
I took it to mean "Project Management Office", but then I recall "Project Support Office" used back in the day.

7moAs a consultant, I always ask my client 'What does your PMO actually stand for?" Not everyone know, unfortunately. But then we have a talk about what the PMO members do and with which authority - that sorts it out 🤓
