How did you get into airfreight/logistics? By accident actually! It was the job position that I was attracted to rather than the type of company it was with. I applied for the position of “Subscriptions Administrator”. It fitted nicely with my previous role where I used to manage memberships for the UK sports governing body of ice skating If you could have dinner with any three people, living or dead, who would they be and why? The comedian Micky Flanagan. Because he is hilarious! Any of my grandparents. They all passed away before I was born so it would be great to talk about times gone by. My best friends. Who doesn’t like a girly chat to put the world to rights! What is the best piece of advice you have ever received? Don’t believe everything you read online! What is something we wouldn’t know about you from your CV? I completed the application forms for Torvill and Dean to make their comeback at the Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer back in 1994. If you had not pursued a career in airfreight, what other field would you have liked to go into? Veterinary care. What hobby have you always wanted to try but never got around to? Not exactly a hobby but I always wanted to be able to fly a helicopter. Shame about my fear of heights! It’s Sunday so that means I’ll be watching my Cleveland Browns play in Las Vegas. But because I’m a nerd, this morning I’m also researching what it takes logistically to be a visiting team in the NFL. Every week there’s a massive logistical operation in the background ensuring everything runs like clockwork. From coordinating airfreight for player gear, medical supplies, and training equipment, to ground transportation for players, coaches, and staff, each away game is a carefully planned operation. Hotels, meals, and meeting spaces must be arranged, often across multiple time zones. It’s a massive effort. Whether it’s optimizing airfreight routes, managing travel schedules, or ensuring the right equipment is on the sidelines, logistics plays a critical role in ensuring teams can focus on the game, not the details. As someone with a background in logistics, this has been a fun “rabbit hole” to go down. It’s a great reminder that successful teams aren’t just on the field – they’re also behind the scenes. Today, we start with Jan Nicolas Peters 🚢, who, after eight years as a chief mate on the high seas 🌊, swapped the bridge of a container ship for a desk in Tailwind’s Operations Management last year. Together with his three teammates (all of whom also bring their personal practical shipping expertise to the table), the 35-year-old has been using his expertise in our headquarters in Hamburg 💙. As Senior Operations Manager, Jan Nicolas is tasked with the complex and dynamic planning of the entire voyage of our fleet: from stowage planning and fuel bunkering to synchronizing the arrivals of the feeder ships with the port calls of our Panda Express Service 🐼. Are bunkering barges available when we need them? What about the berths in the respective ports?
