In Eric Johnson’s recent article in the Journal of Commerce entitled “Large forwarder acquisition activity, advent of AI puts pressure on midsize NVOs” (full article in the link below, subscription required), he details how non-vessel-operating common carriers (NVOs) face a difficult business future due to increased competition from large forwarders and the future impact of artificial intelligence (AI). Eric and other contributors highlight the challenge for midsize NVOs around keeping up with efficiency gains that come from large forwarders consolidating their positions through acquisitions and introducing process automation that keeps operating costs in check. While some of the challenges that are observed are real issues, at Trade Tech Inc. we have seen multiple customers, including some who would be considered small, utilize technology to help them overcome obstacles.
