PICTURE IN PICTURE ADS WORK! Catch today's episode of MediaScience MYTH BUSTING Episode 04: Picture-in-Picture (PIP) TV ads THE MYTH: Picture-in-Picture ads are not as impactful as full screen video ads. VERDICT: BUSTED Remember, every work day in October, MediaScience will share research challenging industry conventions. Today, we explore the convention that assumes that PIP ads are less effective than full screen TV ads. We give a brief history of the PIP ad, going back to the industry's first PIP ad placed during the weather crawl inside Good Morning America back in 2009. At the time, the ad sales team at ABC approached MediaScience to test PIP impact to determine just how much of a discount (relative to a :30) they should provide when bringing the product to market. The shocking discovery: PIP ads were actually MORE effective than conventional ads. So instead of offering them at great discount, they were introduced as a premium product. Sister network ESPN, having learned from ABC's experience, was curious about what this might mean for NASCAR where there was so much more action than a weather crawl. So once again, we tested - and optimized (working through a range of design issues) - again demonstrating superior results. And with that - the format took off. This strategy allows them to test the waters before committing to newer, pricier content. 2) L͟o͟c͟a͟l͟ ͟T͟a͟s͟t͟e͟s͟ ͟D͟i͟c͟t͟a͟t͟e͟ ͟D͟e͟m͟a͟n͟d͟: Comedy struggles in Italy, while dramas face challenges in India.
