💣 💥 We're excited to share the latest breakthrough from the DMA (Dutch Medication Audit) project, supported by DICA (Dutch Institute for Clinical Auditing), Nederlandse Vereniging van Ziekenhuisapothekers (NVZA), and Zorgverzekeraars Nederland! With the collaboration of 56 hospitals 🏥, DMA investigated whether proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) affect the effectiveness of CKD4/6 inhibitors in breast cancer treatment. The findings? 👉 No impact on overall survival was observed, putting into question the validity of concerns about reduced efficacy when PPIs are prescribed alongside CKD4/6 inhibitors. Not one, but two of our collaborative working projects have been shortlisted for Best Pharmaceutical Partnership with the NHS at the HSJ Partnership Awards 2025! These awards recognise the most effective collaborations with the NHS, highlighting the benefits that working with the private and third sectors can bring to patients and NHS organisations. Lilly UK and NHS Gloucestershire Hospitals collaborated to develop and implement an electronic patient reported outcome measures platform for breast cancer, facilitating quality improvements including remote assessments, reducing clinic workload, and enhancing patient management. The objective was to empower breast cancer patients in self-managing their disease, facilitate timely clinical decision-making, and improve clinic efficiency through remote management of stable patients, and sets a blueprint for broader adoption across UK oncology services. In another project, Lilly UK, Dementias Platform UK, and four NHS Trusts are collaborating to deliver earlier and accurate Alzheimer’s disease diagnoses through cerebrospinal fluid testing. Our aim is to develop a framework to enable the model to be commissioned at scale. Early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease allows patients and their caregivers to make informed decisions, plan ahead, and access suitable care, including clinical trials. We believe that this transformative project has the potential to redefine the diagnostic landscape of Alzheimer’s disease in the UK and improve outcomes for patients. Let's give a standing ovation to our unsung heroes: community oncology pharmacists! While academic medical centers often steal the spotlight for their pharmacy integration (and often big marketing budgets), it's high time we acknowledge the colossal impact oncology pharmacists have in community practices After all, the majority of oncology care unfolds right in these very settings, making their potential impact nothing short of monumental The team at McKesson (Melissa Carroll, Shannon Hough, et al) have published an analysis of the impact and value of integrating a 0.5 FTE remote clinical oncology pharmacist in four community practices in their network And the results are mind blowing 🤯 Over 1 year: 🔎 5716 order reviews were completed 🙋♀️ intervention rate of 57% - most common were: interventions with clinical impact on the patient (36%), dose rounding (35%) and therapeutic interchange (30%) 💰 interventions improved the practice margins by $1,455,033 and reduced total medication costs by $5,962,551 🔄 average return on investment was 415% (range 100–915%) This is from 4 part-time FTEs… 😲 A lot of cost savings stemmed from the simple yet powerful act of dose rounding - a skill that every pharmacist can wield from day one So, let's raise the curtain and applaud our community oncology pharmacists who are tirelessly working behind the scenes, making major impacts for oncology patients across every practice setting 👏👏👏👏👏 --- 📌 When you’re ready to prioritize learning oncology, the Enjoy Learning Oncology (ELO) program can help you! Medical (NASDAQ:AEMD) announced FY 2Q results and provided a business update yesterday. The company has made significant strides in moving its clinical activities forward over the past few weeks. The company has enrolled the first two patients in its oncology trial (see below) at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Australia. Another site that will participate in the study, Pindara Private Hospital in Australia, has also received ethics committee approval and training on the Aethlon Hemopurifier® and is now initiating patient enrollment. The company has also trained staff at a third hospital in Australia and expects this facility to receive formal ethics committee approval in the near-term and begin patient enrollments. At the 2024 ASCO Quality Care Symposium, new research revealed a sixfold increase in patients requiring drug switches due to payer step edits, with each switch costing practices $76 on average. Dr. Johnetta Blakely, EVP at Tennessee Oncology, emphasized the growing administrative strain these requirements place on healthcare providers, particularly in oncology. As drug regimens become more complex and overhead costs rise, the burden on physicians is leading to increased burnout and complicating patient care. Dr. Blakely warns that smaller community oncology practices may struggle to navigate these challenges, potentially impacting access to care in underserved areas. Can you learn everything you need to know as an oncology pharmacist from NCCN? A new-ish oncopharm working at a fairly big center with over 20 pharmacist colleagues told me he doesn’t need to ask his colleagues questions because he has access to NCCN 😳 Great example of not being able to see the label from inside the jar 👀 It’s impossible to get everything you need from NCCN, or any other oncology resource for that matter Why? Because although information can get you far, it can’t get you to the finish line, where you can confidently and effectively manage a patient’s treatment plan. Experience matters. This is why “experiential” education in school is so important - you need to be able to practice and “hear” the language spoken in the real world. After all, it is called “practicing pharmacy”. The way to do this in oncology is to communicate - with your pharmacy, physician, nursing, and other colleagues. To have discussions, hear other people’s viewpoints and thought processes and let them hear yours. Everyone learns and develops more expertise when they surround themselves with others like this. Even if you are the only oncology pharmacist at your site, you can still do this virtually through communities, social media, and networking groups The biggest risk as a pharmacist is drinking your own Kool-Aid and thinking you know enough, or have enough access to resources, that you don’t need other people Oncology is 100% a team sport Application of knowledge is more important than knowledge, and that’s what experience gives you And we have that experience to share inside the ELO Collaborative - tap into the experiences of your peers and over 24 expert pharmacists working in every topic area. The great thing about being in community with peers are all the great questions that are surfaced Something that came up recently in my community of oncology pharmacists was about paclitaxel dose titrations, sparked by an infusion reaction at a member’s center As expected, we learned that practice varies - while most centers don’t titrate paclitaxel, at least one does There was discussion around the data, or lack thereof, for this strategy, including Oncology Nursing Society guidelines When something happens in practice, like a patient experiencing an infusion reaction, it’s tempting to jump into “fix-it” mode to try and prevent a recurrence Sometimes, that approach is justified if there’s a clear cause-and-effect relationship. But more often, reactive changes aren’t the best strategy, even if driven by good intentions. If you encounter a situation like this in your practice, start by checking published data, being cautious with retrospective analyses, particularly single institution. If reliable data is lacking, as with this specific question, consider reviewing your own internal data. This kind of quality initiative can help you better understand how frequently an issue occurs in your setting - relying on human memory and anecdotal evidence isn’t sufficient to make a change Discussions like these underscore the power of community in oncology.
