I recently had the honor of attending a insightful webinar on anti-microbial stewardship, led by the esteemed @Dr. Naila Jabeen and organized by RxConnect Pk. The session shed light on the crucial importance of responsible antibiotic use, particularly in the context of Pakistan's healthcare landscape. Dr. Naila Jabeen emphasized the alarming rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Pakistan, which poses a significant threat to public health. She highlighted the need for a multi-faceted approach to combat AMR, including improved antibiotic stewardship, enhanced infection control practices, and robust surveillance systems. The webinar also discussed the challenges faced by Pakistan in tackling AMR, including inadequate antibiotic regulation, limited access to diagnostic tools, and a lack of standardized treatment guidelines. Dr. Jabeen stressed the importance of collaboration between healthcare professionals, policymakers, and the community to address these challenges and ensure effective anti-microbial stewardship. The webinar served as a valuable platform for healthcare professionals to share knowledge, experiences, and best practices in anti-microbial stewardship. It reinforced the urgent need for collective action to address the growing threat of AMR in Pakistan and ensure the responsible use of antibiotics for future generations. As the Operational Head of the Drug and Poison Information Center (DPIC), it was an honor to lead efforts in bridging the gap between knowledge and practice. We emphasized critical areas such as: ✅ Rational prescribing and dispensing of antibiotics. ✅ The dangers of self-medication and overuse of antimicrobials. ✅ Strengthening infection prevention and control strategies. 💬 The discussions reinforced that AMR is not just a healthcare problem; it's a societal issue. 🏥 #AMR and #HAIs: first and foremost, do not forget #IPC measures The misuse and overuse of antimicrobials are among the main drivers in the development of AMR, and the appropriate use of these precious medications is essential 💊 However, we should keep in mind that also inadequate infection prevention and control measures contribute to the emergence and spread of AMR. And AMR is closely related to healthcare-associated infections, as we know. 📊 For this reason, even before using antimicrobials correctly, preventing the occurrence and controlling the spread of HAIs in healthcare facilities is essential. It should be considered the first principle of an appropriate antimicrobial stewardship program in every hospital worldwide. In this narrative review, an international working group of physicians listed and described 7 IPC strategies that all healthcare workers must know and support: ✅ Prevention of HAIs. ✅ Hand hygiene. ✅ Environmental hospital hygiene. ✅ Screening, decolonization, isolation, and cohorting. ✅ Adapting evidence-based practices to the local context. ✅ Surveillance. ✅ Promoting safety culture. 📢 Fewer HAIs will develop in our hospitals, fewer antimicrobials we will have to use to combat multidrug-resistant organisms.

#InfectionPreventionandControl(IPC) is a practical, evidence-based approach to prevent avoidable infections in health care settings, including those caused by anti-microbial resistant germs. 📢We call #HCPs and community at large to prioritize it as it reduces reliance on antibiotics. #AntimicrobialResistance(AMR) occurs when an infection no longer responds to the medicines that were designed to treat them (i.e. antimicrobials including antibiotics, antifungals, antiparasitics, and antivirals). No one should get sick while receiving or providing health care. However, no country can claim to be free of what are called #HealthcareAssociatedInfections (HAIs) which unfortunately are one of the most common patient safety risks. Some of the well-known potentially harmful organisms or germs include (not limited to) Clostridium difficile (C. difficile), Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE), Staphylococcus aureus, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and of concern, Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) gram negative organisms like Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Strengthening IPC programmes and best practices and ensuring access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) in all healthcare settings can achieve a significant reduction in the rates of infection and as such reduce death or disability from these infections. The inappropriate use of antimicrobial medicines accelerates the emergence and spread of AMR infections. #IPC provides a way to curb the spread of resistant infections in hospitals, reducing the need for them. In healthcare, IPC, including hand hygiene at the appropriate times, effective WASH and the responsible use of antimicrobial medicines (antimicrobial stewardship), all allow for an effective approach to addressing this global issue. Ultimately, this approach saves lives, curtails healthcare costs, and alleviates an unnecessary burden on healthcare systems. Hand hygiene is still one of the most effective things we can all do to keep people safe from infections in healthcare. So, sharing knowledge about hand hygiene is important. There are many reasons why educating and changing behaviours of health and care workers and others, including patients, is challenging, along with the successful implementation of turning knowledge into practice. This includes pressures on time, lack of resources, human and otherwise – and in some countries including a lack of running water – etc. Health literacy can also be a challenge in many settings. Raising awareness about the importance of learning on hand hygiene at the right times to prevent a range of infectious diseases and AMR has been highlighted by many leading organizations including the World Health Organization (WHO). Ultimately, hand hygiene stops the spread of harmful infections, some of which are resistant to antimicrobial medicines; it saves lives – yours, a loved ones or someone most vulnerable in society – so why would we not want to commit to this!

Happy New Year from Mackwell Health to all our partners and customers. 2024 seemed to pass so quickly, but as we look back we can reflect on a year of many achievements – here are a few highlights: ·        We launched ‘Minibox HD2’, which remains the only UV-C disinfection chamber accredited to the BS8628:2022 standard by a UKAS laboratory. ·        We developed a range of fully-evidenced use cases for UV-C based decontamination allowing previously single-use items to be replaced by re-usable alternatives, saving thousands of Tonnes of CO2(eq) in the process. Examples being anaesthesia masks, laryngoscopes and PPE. ·        With new Commercial Director Dan Morgan Smith on board, we engaged with the NHS at scale and are now currently active with more than 50 Trusts. ·        We were successful in achieving SBRI funding support, a first for Mackwell Group, which has allowed us to continue to accelerate the evidence process around UV-C high level disinfection to BS8628:2022 standard. ·        We implemented an ISO13485 quality system and completed a Stage 2 audit with certification pending. ·        We launched the Mackwell Health business in the Middle East at the Arab Health exhibition, with the first 3 partners now signed in the region by Kareem Osman. ·        We joined the Infection Prevention Society and at the annual conference  presented a poster and paper on the safe, evidenced re-use of cushioned anaesthesia masks via UV-C based decontamination. We have big plans for 2025 and announcements in the pipeline around new products, corporate partnerships and projects, which we look forward to sharing with you.
