Are you investing enough effort in your negotiation prep? Imagine stepping into a negotiation feeling fully prepared and confident. Spoiler, you'd be killing it! Data from over 600 clients shows a clear trend, they aren't spending enough time preparing! More than 70% of our clients prepare less than an hour for each hour they'll be negotiating. This is far from optimal. You should spend 2X to 3X in preparation. Effective preparation, especially the discovery phase, is crucial. For instance, how can you effectively propose valuable trades without knowing precisely what your counterpart desires? Example: Suppose you're negotiating a software sale, and thorough preparation reveals your client's main concern isn't price but long-term support. Yesterday we discussed how Zip essentially issued an irresistible public challenge to check out their new RFI, so 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒅𝒐𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒓 dove in to see if this would be the first RFI (since Procuri started the craze back in 2006) to break the "𝑭𝑹𝑬𝑬" vendor RFI mold (which, to date, has only resulted in RFIs biased towards the solution of the issuing vendor, which is a pretty hefty price tag). We didn't give a verdict, because we are doing a 4-part deep dive investigation, but we did note that it has a few strikes (five, to be precise) against it from the get-go.
