Our report on Risks Related to Emerging and Disruptive Transportation Technologies is out! Conventional risk assessments consider the severity and likelihood of an incident occurring. However, when it comes to emerging and disruptive technologies, determining the likelihood of potential risks can be challenging due to the lack of historical data. In our project for the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP), we developed an agile/adaptive risk management framework to assist transportation agencies, state Departments of Transportation (DOTs), and Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) in managing risks associated with the adoption of emerging and disruptive transportation technologies. We also used this framework to develop a risk register for four transportation technologies: Electric Vehicles, Connected Autonomous Vehicles, Mobility on Demand (MoD)/Mobility as a Service (MaaS), and Advanced Air Mobility. #EVs #emergingtechnologies #advancedairmobility #modmaas #transportationtechnologies #NCHRP #TRB #RAND

Reflecting on the AWARD-H2020 Project Sam Wood, our segment leader for industrial automation, attended the final consortium meeting in Brussels last week to discuss lessons learned and review what the project had delivered. As a result of the AWARD-H2020 project, we are proud to have developed the RAS3 sensor, a compact, cost-effective, high-resolution radar designed for autonomous industrial vehicle applications. Through AWARD-H2020, we learned that adverse weather, like snow and rain, poses significant challenges for autonomous outdoor logistics. Our high-resolution radar technology proved critical in ensuring all-weather driving capability: taking proposals from pilots, to real-world, commercially viable applications. As we finalise production plans and work with early adopters, we look forward to growing the relationships we've formed through the project and realising the benefits of autonomous outdoor logistics. I'm happy to share that a RAND report has been published on the risks from emerging and disruptive transportation technologies. Steven Popper, Hye Min Park, Zara Fatima Abdurahaman, Jalal Awan, Joe Iacobucci, Sydney Maves, Adam Cohen, and I completed the work for The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP). LEITNER ConnX - e-mobility solution for urban areas LEITNER The urban mobility revolution is moving closer: ConnX, LEITNER’s new intermodal mobility system, is soon to be launched on the market in 2025, after successfully passing all tests. The centrepiece of the new ConnX solution - derived from the English word connect - is a ropeway, whose cabin is transferred over to an autonomous electric vehicle when it enters the station, which then continues its journey at street level. The system offers two main advantages in an urban context: firstly, topographical or structural obstacles can be overcome more easily with a ropeway solution, and secondly, the intermodal "double solution" is an important alternative for all those areas where a continuous ropeway variant is not feasible for various reasons. https://lnkd.in/g6mgxaRM

RAD Propulsion is busy working on our latest industrial research project, RAD Box (Last Blue Mile) – TRIG23. This industrial research initiative represents a significant step forward in addressing the challenges of last-mile delivery in the UK. As roads become increasingly congested and air quality declines, our project aims to develop an automated, clean, electric marine system to complete the final stage of delivery on the water. By strategically utilising waterways, we seek to alleviate congestion, reduce CO2 emissions, and enhance air quality.   As we embark on this six-month feasibility study, aiming to develop last-mile delivery through the innovative use of autonomous surface vessels (ASVs), our goal is to develop a working prototype, powered by our RAD 40 drive technology. We love hearing stories about how our technology is being used to accelerate the development of the 'vehicle of the future'. In July 2023, as part of the 1000 MAD (1000 mile autonomous drive) project, the Politecnico di Milano developed a self-driving car that successfully navigated 20 km of the A46 in Italy. The first test didn't include any tunnels, however later in 2023 they performed another test that included the Valsesia tunnel. The tests help the team understand how accurately the vehicle positions itself across its route, with and without GNSS, and also what improvements could be made to the vehicle set-up and the highway infrastructure to ensure the total safety of passengers and pedestrians. More testing is planned for 2024. It's also great to see one of our technology partners RoboSense play their part in the project. 🌟 Exciting Developments in Automated Vehicle Legislation 🌟 The ULTIMO project aims to revolutionize public transportation by deploying economically viable, large-scale Automated Vehicle (AV) services, prioritizing passenger needs and sustainability. By adopting a holistic approach, ULTIMO seeks to integrate AVs seamlessly into city landscapes, offering on-demand, door-to-door services for enhanced accessibility and inclusivity. In line with these goals, the European Commission's recent adoption of groundbreaking legislation marks a significant milestone. In 2022, the EU introduced the first worldwide legislation for the type-approval of Automated Driving Systems, paving the way for the introduction of fully Automated Vehicles into the European market. This comprehensive framework not only sets standards for industry but also provides clarity for Approval Authorities across EU member states. The regulation, outlined in EU Regulation 2022/1426, introduces innovative elements to support the operationalization of vehicles operating without the presence of a driver. With a focus on harmonization and safety, the EU aims to ensure consistent practices and facilitate the seamless integration of AVs into urban environments. As we move forward, collaborations between industry stakeholders, regulatory bodies, and projects like ULTIMO will be crucial in shaping the future of mobility.
