Is Boston Markets failure one of the biggest fumbles in QSR/ fast casual in the last 30 years? Could have been a first class concept. Was far ahead of its time with a relatively healthier food product. Had a great real estate footprint already. With a few tweaks, proper branding and store reinvestment it could have been a top competitor in the healthy fast casual space. RIP. Another killed retailer gone too soon. Alicia Kelso at Nation's Restaurant News tells us - "KFC’s newest restaurant in Rome, Italy, marks the company’s 30,000th global location. The company announced the milestone today, noting that a new KFC location opens somewhere in the world every 3.5 hours on average. “Opening our 30,000th restaurant is a testament to the support of our local business partners, employees, and customers over the past nearly 75 years,” Sabir Sami, CEO of KFC Global, said in a statement.  "While we are a global brand, we aim to meet the unique needs and expectations of our guests on a local level, with menus that resonate with the local culture and flavors of each community. That also includes serving local communities through our food donation and upskilling programs, which operate in many of our markets, including Italy. In 2023, KFC opened nearly 2,7000 restaurants across 96 countries, a 10% development pace and setting a brand development record. More than 80% of unit growth came from 15 publicly traded franchisees. KFC accounts for nearly 50% of parent company Yum Brands’ divisional operating growth. During Yum! Brands’ most recent earnings call last month, executives called out several standout markets for the brand. China, India, Thailand, South Africa, and Spain drove KFC US's development during 2023 and were part of a group of 15 countries that grew unit count by more than 25 restaurants. Further, KFC plans to enter its 150th country later this year. Big news in the fast-food world! Restaurant Brands International, the parent company of Burger King, just acquired its largest U.S. franchisee, Carrols Restaurant Group, for a cool $1.1 billion. What does this mean? More renovations for Burger King locations: Restaurant Brands plans to invest $500 million to remodel about 600 of the acquired Carrols restaurants. This could mean a fresher look and feel for your favorite Whopper joint! Shifting ownership: Carrols operated over 1,000 Burger King restaurants across 23 states, representing 15% of all U.S. locations. These will now be directly owned by Restaurant Brands, giving them more control over the brand's image and operations. Jonathan Maze Restaurant Business Online tells us about Tasty Restaurant Group - "The multibrand franchisee, which also operates Pizza Hut, Burger King, Dunkin'’ and Taco Bell, acquired the locations in the central and Southeast U.S." Multibrand franchisee Tasty Restaurant Group has acquired 64 KFC restaurants in the central and Southeast U.S., owner Triton Pacific Capital Partners, LLC said this week. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. But the deal marks a “significant expansion” for Tasty’s KFC brands, which operate under the name Tasty Chick’n. But the deal gives Tasty Restaurant Group 470 restaurants in several brands, including Pizza Hut, Burger King, Dunkin’, Baskin-Robbins and Taco Bell, in addition to KFC. They operate in multiple states. Craig Faggen, CEO of Triton Pacific, a private equity group, called the deal “transformative” for the Tasty Chick’n business. “With a historical track record of strong cash flow and above brand average unit volumes, we are confident in the growth prospects alongside our current portfolio,” he said in a statement. The company called the acquisition an “excellent investment opportunity” that could fuel new development opportunities. That would be good news for KFC, which has run into some challenges over the past year and a half. The brand closed a net of 127 locations last year as its sales and unit volumes slowed. More and more Buffalo Wild Wings are flying out the door via delivery and takeout orders. That has the purveyor of chicken wings shifting its strategy towards quick service locations and away from the traditional sports bar. It's also sign of a bigger trend as casual dining continues to struggle, while takeout and delivery continue to be the breakfast of champions for customers. Chances are you've experienced or part of this trend. On most school nights, many restaurants are essentially empty, yet enjoy a decent if not vibrant takeout and delivery business. If anything, bustling dine-in restaurants can often feel like the exception than the norm these days. So the popularity of BWW on the go shouldn't come as a surprise, and no, it's not just a tech bro's dream. The chain just opened its 100th Go location, which unlike its multiplex sports bars are smaller and focus only on takeout and delivery orders. For context, a typical BWW sports bar is around 6,000 square feet on average, while a Go location is 1,500 square feet, meaning cheaper real estate that’s faster to build and easier to operate. What's interesting about chicken wings is they're kind of an offshoot of the chicken sandwich wars that swept the nation like K-pop and Taylor Swift. The past two years have seen some of the biggest chains flying the coop to come up with their own chicken sandwiches, leading to a poultry shortage. Chicken Wings are the next farmyard frontier with other chains now looking to launch their own versions to bolster their sales. In essence, there are two trends in flight. For one, the struggles of in-restaurant dining has restaurants flocking to delivery and takeout. Even if you don't completely agree, the reality is that people are dining out less. The other more tasty trend is chicken continues to be the "It" food.
