What an eNeRGy! 👊🏻💪🏼 Together with my colleagues Joyce de Looff , Ineke Huybrechts ,Charlotte Röhl , Jeroen Vreeke , Rosanne Houterman and Rob Jeffreys, the HZ NRG project week was organized. For one week a group of 74 students coming from 13 ❗️different study programs came to together to work on a very interesting and much discussed topic. Within the theme Broad Prosperity 🌎 students got familiar with Smart Mobility 🚌🚙🛵🚲within the beautiful region of Zeeland. Different challenges and topics were worked on. For example: - How do we encourage public transport? - How can mobility be made safer? - What innovative transport solutions can be divised and how do we keep/make them sustainable? The outcomes from these and other questions were all for our client Ron de Bruijn and Kirsten Bosman from Provincie Zeeland This week interdisciplinairy working and learning were central. Also thinking outside the box to come up with innovative and creative solutions were key 🔑. With help of the Design Thinking method students came up with some very helpful outcomes for our client! The introduction and swift adoption of carbon credits (CORCs) and the voluntary carbon market (VCM) sort of turned everyone's biochar business upside down. 🤦♀️ As an industry, we realized in order to get the biochar market back on its feet again, it would take more than just scientific studies singing its praises. It would also take seeking out real visionary customers, "biochar pioneers", who cared deeply about the lifecycle climate benefits of biochar beyond just its carbon sequestration benefits. These customers, aka early adopters, would also care about catastrophic wildfire prevention and creating value from debris on the forest floor. They would care about replacing "dirty" products with "clean" ones. And they would even care about how the product they are using is creating jobs in disadvantaged communities. These biochar pioneers would most likely be found in unlikely places 🤔 , new markets we hadn't yet developed as an industry...and some of the hardest work we would have in front of us would be to find them. We are happy to introduce our most recent customer and biochar pioneer, City of Palo Alto. Yesterday Phoenix Energy delivered 90 cubic yards of biochar for The City of Palo Alto to use in two bioretention containers scoped as part of a renovation and expansion project at #BoulwarePark, a 1.5 acre neighborhood park sandwiched between Matadero Creek and residential and commercial properties. May is over, and I wanted to share what I've been up to, and some of my insights! First off: Me, Sinem Ünlü, and Tashfia Diha worked on a Moonshot idea for energy storage on the moon! Our idea, LunarFlux, won the "Most Innovative" award from the panel of judges when we presented it! I also attended the last official TKS Session for this year, filled with insights about how to live a successful life. Essentially, if you don't do anything out of the ordinary, your life won't change. Therefore, you have to give yourself an unfair advantage over other people.
