The biggest takeaway for CFOs from Lex Fridman’s podcast with Jeff Bezos:  Think long — SUPER long — term. “You can literally solve problems if you think long-term,” Jeff says. “And we aren’t really good at thinking long-term. Five years is a tough timeframe for most institutions to think past. And we probably need to stretch that to 10 years and 15 years and 20 years and 25 years, and we’d do a better job for our children or our grandchildren if we could stretch those thinking horizons.” This happens in corporate financial planning all the time: companies obsess over planning and optimizing next quarter’s metrics while totally ignoring next year, let alone 5 and 10 years out. That’s why it’s essential to zoom out to a strategic mindset: asking critical questions that dive under the surface like: 1) Long-Term Budget Allocation How can we make sure budget allocations are prioritized to support not only immediate needs but also our long-term strategy? 2) Stress Testing  How thoroughly have we stress-tested our projections against various long-term scenarios? What contingencies can we put in place to ensure resilience in the case of a major issue? 3) Relevant KPIs  Do our metrics focus on the short-term at the detriment of long-term success?
