🌳 Sustainable Practices in an Old Olive Orchard 🌿 After the olive harvest season wrapped up in late December, we've been busy implementing sustainable practices to nurture the land and ensure the longevity and well-being of these centuries-old olive trees. Here's a glimpse into the circular agriculture methods we're embracing: - #Waste as Wealth: We've returned the agro-industrial residues from milling, including pulp, pits, and water, back to the fields. While they are currently resting atop the #soil, they will soon be integrated to enrich the earth, enhancing plant health and sequestering carbon. - #Pruning with Purpose: Our green pruning isn't just a maintenance task; it's a revival technique. By thinning the trees, we illuminate their cores, stimulating growth and vitality. This ancient art form, essential to olive cultivation, risks fading away as fewer young people choose farming. That's why we're looking to #carbonfinancing, not only to extract more value from our orchards but also to inspire the new generation to see agriculture as a pathway to #environmentalstewardship. - #Mulching for the Future: The finer pruning remnants are first shredded mechanically then scattered as mulch, returning organic matter and nutrients to the soil. Larger branches find a second life as alternative #fuel sources, cutting down on waste and promoting sustainable living. Through these practices, we demonstrate the full circle of #sustainability in our treasured ecosystems. Our approach is simple: attach the right value to each action and process, and nothing goes to waste. 💡 Case Study Spotlight with Local Bounti - changing the fate of waste through inventive diversion strategies! 💡 Local Bounti is dedicated to minimizing its environmental footprint and developed an inaugural sustainability report at its flagship facility in Hamilton, MT. With a commitment to data transparency and by leveraging RII's benchmarking tool, PowerScore, the sustainability team at Local Bounti worked to refine on-site waste tracking to identify waste streams, primary sources of waste, and diversion opportunities. By engaging with its community and other local businesses, Local Bounti was able to develop successful waste diversion strategies, with impressive results including: ➡ In its first year, the team successfully diverted 79% of on-site waste from landfills, surpassing its commitment to achieve 50% diversion ➡ Identifying organic waste as a primary contributor to waste streams, and using this insight to create partnerships with farms using plant waste as animal feed and develop commercial composting partnerships ➡ Developing a foundation of standard operating procedures (SOPs), reduction strategies, and goals that it plans to implement across its facilities Thank you to Local Bounti for your commitment to waste reduction and data standardization across the CEA industry! 🍷 🍷 🍷 Grapevines are doing more than just producing delicious wine! According to a recent study published in Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems, grapevines are nature's carbon-sucking machines. The study found that regenerative practices build more soil carbon in vineyards, making them ideal testing grounds for broader agricultural models. Farmers who produce high-value products could lead the way in experimenting, developing, and de-risking regenerative practices. The study also found that a combination of soil-building practices added more carbon to vineyard soils compared to annual cropland.
