Your Level UP message for the week:
When interacting online through just typing, we can’t see faces or hear voices. The absence of hearing tone and inflection and reading expressions and body language changes how we perceive people. We don’t have the audio and visual clues or cues for healthy interaction.
In my mind, you look like (this).
Therefore, we tend to attribute voices and imagined characteristics to the written text. We base this on our own expectations and experiences. The actual intended meaning and tone of the text is not properly or fully received.
We respond to our perception, not the reality.
This tends to lead us to act differently than we might in person. The internet blurs the boundaries that keep our behavior in check.
We can also start internalizing the online world in a way that reinforces the belief that our online experiences are the most significant. We can start to believe that the online world revolves around us and our experiences, making us the main character in every story.
This, too, can change how we behave.
It's important to balance our online experiences with real-world interactions and different perspectives. While the online world is a valuable and enjoyable space, it can limit our understanding of the broader picture if we exclusively see everything through the lens of our own online experiences.
Staying open-minded and recognizing the diversity of opinions and experiences online and offline is crucial for a well-rounded perspective. Connecting in person with others is a way to do this.
A local church can help with that.
Choosing a local church in real life is a great way to keep our behavior in check. Not only will it help us stay balanced, it will give us the community that we need. Along with that, it will provide amazing life guidance through the understanding of who God is and what He has done for us.
Make the connection: How might we talk with our kids about how we view those who are on the other side of the screen?
We are #ForTheGamer and help players play with purpose and win for good.
