The Pacific Forest of Ecuador is not an easy ecosystem to classify, owing to the fact that it has so many different faces. Various names have been affixed to it over the years, but none of them really stuck. The western coast of Ecuador is, in fact, home to a diversity of distinct forest types within relatively close proximity. Chocó rainforest, premontane cloud forest, moist evergreen forest, and semi-deciduous or dry forest are just a few of the forest types that can be found in the Pacific Forest of Ecuador. In one particular area—in the northwest of the province of Manabí, between the towns of Jama and Pedernales—all of these forest types can be encountered over the course of a single day’s hike. Conflict between humans and large mammals like elephants are one of the many challenges that conservationists face. Elephants cause damage by eating crops and breaking into houses for rice and other tasty items. Building expensive fences around forests is one way to address the problem. However, community members, like volunteer elephant conservationist Shankar Luitel (https://lnkd.in/eBJzpp8S), are calling for the creation of a green corridor so the elephants can move safely on their traditional paths. A message from Zimbabwe: "Water is life - and life comes from Water. Funds are being raised to help establish a water supply in a part of Zimbabwe called Mahamara which is located in the Sebakwe wilderness area and neighbours the Sebakwe Recreational Park. Mahamara is a prime wildlife habitat that once teemed with zebra, warthog, impala, kudu, wildebeest, tsessebe, giraffe, sable and eland amongst other species including migratory elephant, leopard and cheetah. The area is also home to the brown hyena which is a unique and uncommon species. As a result of illegal poaching and compounded by weather change patterns bringing irregular rains and lack of water, the wildlife has dissipated but all is not lost and there is always hope and opportunity to restore and make a positive difference which is what Mahamara is all about. To exist and thrive, wildlife requires 3 key ingredients being HABITAT SECURITY WATER. The habitat is in place at Mahamara and a current ongoing long term project to provide security and prevent poaching is a work in progress and which is showing positive results after 4 years of concerted effort. In addition to the three key ingredients, conservation awareness and participation for local communities is also a major part of the programme, but it will take more than habitat , security and conservation awareness to bring the animals back. WATER is needed as the third key ingredient. . When vital water is supplied then life can exist and also plants and vegetation abound and the remnant animals will return to occupy the habitat to feed and drink and to feel safe in this habitat, which has the required anti poaching protection and security. The animals will then naturally breed and multiply and in short time the ecosystem and area will thrive once more. A series of water supply works are planned, including bore holes, solar pumps, pipelines and reestablishment of old watering holes and points that will cause the wildlife to proliferate. When wildlife succeeds in an area such as Mahamara ,then the community will also thrive because the habitat and land use is being adjusted and restored to include how nature designed it to be and where value can be derived. As March is B Corp month we wanted to share an update on Meadow Mission, an initiative that was born out of the accreditation process. Since 2021 we've donated 2% of turnover to create wildflower meadows, a vital habitat for bees with our charity partner Plantlife International. To date, with our customers help, we’ve planted over 20 acres! We've lost 98% of our wildflower meadows since the 1940's which is a vital habitat for honey bees as well as many other invertebrates, mammals, bats, and birds. Meadows also store carbon. There is some research suggesting that a flower-full meadow can store 30% more carbon than a flower-less meadow. If you’d invested €1,000,000 in 2001 you’d have… Alas, the graph below does not show the growth of a successful investment but net tree cover loss worldwide.   Since 2001, the world has lost c. 1,205 million acres of tree cover (20 times the size of the UK), destroying ecosystems and reducing our planet’s capacity to act as a carbon sink. As shown in the graph below, the rate at which we lose tree cover is not reducing.   As a proud member of 1% for the Planet, we choose a theme to support each year at Tokoro. This year's theme is #decarbonisation, and we split our contribution between UK and French charities. This week's post is to spotlight the French #charity we have supported this year,   Association Arbres et Paysages en Gironde is dedicated to planting trees, shrubs and hedgerows to promote #biodiversity and preserve wildlife.   Our donation will go towards harvesting seeds in the Gironde region. The seeds are then sent to a nursery to germinate and returned to the charity to be planted. This local supply chain allows to plant species already present in the ecosystem, protecting the region's biodiversity.
