Stepping into a career fair without self-reflection is like sailing without a map. I recently spoke with a transitioning service member about his first career fair, and his takeaway was simple: it left him more confused than when he arrived. When I asked him why, he admitted that he hadn't taken the time to answer the big questions: ➡️ "What do I want to do next?" ➡️ "How do I best contribute to teams?” ➡️ "How can my skills and experiences translate in a given role?" It was only after leaving the fair that he realized the importance of having clarity around those questions. Career fairs are about more than just handing out résumés; they're about telling a coherent story about your skills, experiences, and how you can contribute to a new organization. If you can't give a recruiter a sharp, two-minute pitch about your experience and where you'd fit in, it's worth stepping back to prepare. But if you haven't done all of your due diligence yet that doesn’t mean you should skip career fairs altogether – they can be a critical part of your exploration process. Sometimes, gaining a better understanding of the opportunities available can help you chart your course. The job seeker I spoke with realized what was missing and now has a clearer path forward for the next career fair. In short, reflection and preparation are keys to career fair success - but some initial exploration can also help you sharpen your story. And remember, plenty of resources are available to support you on this journey. Check out the link in the comments.

Though many teachers are skipping job fairs these days, they're still the best way to really get to know a school and connect with recruiters in person. Going to these fairs lets job seekers meet people, ask good questions, and make an impression that's hard to do just by applying online. #TeacherRecruitment #JobFairs #InternationalSchools #EducationCareers #TeachingOpportunities

Excited to step out of my comfort zone and attend an in-person job fair after relying on mostly online searches for my job hunt. It's been over 15 years since I've experienced an event like this, and I'm curious how things have changed. Any recent attendees have tips to share? #jobsearch #jobfair #networking

The Naveen Jindal School of Management Undergraduate Internship and Job Expo last week was a fantastic experience that allowed me to gain insight into the nature of career fairs and prepare me for the many career fairs I will attend. My professor, Denise C., played an important role in preparing for the career fair. Her guidance on cover letters, resumes, and elevator pitches allowed me to prepare well beforehand. The opportunity to talk to the recruiters at the career fair allowed me to obtain first-hand exposure to body language and professional communication skills. The diversity of job opportunities at the fair covered a wide range of skills and majors. While there weren't many opportunities for first-year students, the exposure and interaction with the recruiters were significant steps toward future career-fair interactions. I had the honor of speaking to Ashley Rojas, a Human Resources Generalist from Southwest Solutions Group, and I'm grateful for how she answered all my questions transparently and effectively! One crucial piece of advice I would offer future career fair attendees is to balance your career aspirations and the opportunities that come your way. While it's important to have a clear idea of the fields you're interested in, it's equally vital to keep an open mind about internships and jobs to which your skills can be applied. Flexibility is key. Also, I would like to point out that effective time management is essential. Plan your visit to the fair and use your time wisely to engage with as many recruiters as possible.
